The Bravelys.Second ends randomly with a Bad Ending and the game says you unlocked NG+. After you beat the game you can go back to your home town and swim across the lake by your house and it leads you down a path to a guy that tells you you've set foot in the region where the first game took place. You open your world map and realize the entire region is accessible and you're basically only halfway through a game you thought was over.
This was in like 2001 when the internet wasn't a thing and you discover it yourself. You're hit by nostalgia from the original game. You go around as the new protagonist learning about what happened in the 5 years since the first game's protagonist explored the region and you even find him who is at that point the strongest trainer in the game.
This was meta as fuck, and I love it.

Cloud as sort of merged his memories of Zack with his own. He truly believes he's Zack and is distorting things in the past based on what he assumes Zack did or reacted to things, or in the case of Nibelheim he was there and saw the things Zack did and helped out in some way with Sephiroth towards the end, but he's still ultimately inserting himself as Zack instead.
You should try out Crisis Core, it's actually a pretty good despite Genesis' constant book rambling, and it has a fantastic soundtrack.

Cloud and Tifa grew up next to each other. Tifa was literally the girl next door. I'm sure they played a bit or knew each other.. and I'm sure the memory of her being comatose after falling down a cliff at Mt.Nibel with Cloud was probably a big factor in her childhood memories. After he resolved to become an awesome bad ass like Sephiroth she had a hero complex as noted by "I want a hero to save me, just once" crap... she probably thought he'd make it.
And he did. In the flash back where Sephiroth cuts Tifa nearly in half (I wish more fanart would have that wicked scar) Cloud runs up and moves her bleeding half dead self off of the stairs and chases after Sephiroth...who consequently impales Cloud because Cloud is a grunt. Cloud uses the power of adrenaline/bad assery and puts himself back onto the ground while impaled and throws Sephiroth into the Mako in the Nibel reactor before collapsing in a heap onto the ground. Shinra/Hojo roll up and see all of this shit along with Zant or w/e Tifa's martial arts teacher was. Her teacher rescues her from Mt.Nibel but can't save Zack and Cloud so Hojo experiments on both of them. Zack and Cloud get injected with Jenova cells along with the rest of Nibel and Zack breaks out of the jar and escapes with a mentally scarred/fucked up Cloud. They get to the cliff and Zack drags Cloud up there before Zack gets dropped by two Shinra grunts.. Cloud flips what's left of his mental shit, takes Zack's sword and assumes his identity because.. he's insane/has mako poisoning.
