A shame. I can tolerate fair share of shit, but D3 really shot themselves to leg releasing this so close to Senran Kagura. What the hell even caused this? The date for SK was known for quite a while, and this came out of nowhere. They could've easily waited a month or so.

The hardest thing about comboing is Cool Combo timing, which you can practice at your leisure in practice mode. Everything else is still simple, though it can be easy to fill a little overwhelmed I suppose.

Good combos using the game's "Cool Combo" system are really hard because of the incredibly strict, varying (as in from hit to hit, the hits themselves never change timing) timing on everything, unless you use the ring that increases the windows, but I'm pretty sure you can only have one of those between the four characters, maybe not though I've only played the Japanese version of both Z and Z2. I'd like someone to make some weebums though.

You say that whilst claiming Drakengard 3 does it better? Drakengard 3 is one of the clunkiest action games of the past generation. It's almost as stiff as the Musou clone combat system it evolved from.
And Mitsurugi isn't stiff at all, it's around the same level of responsiveness as DMC3/4. Go back and play it for a bit and you'll see. Maybe it's not quite Bayonetta level of responsive, but that's hardly surprising.

No, but it's already more sophisticated than D3 from the start anyway. The florish system alone makes puts it above that.
And quite frankly the additional abilities and weapons in DmC were nothing special to have. Sure, it added more variety to a degree, but it hardly evolved the core combat well.

That's one of it's failings, yes. But even those goons are an actual threat, which is more than can be said for DmC and D3 enemies, frankly.
And the bosses, whilst not amazing, are still better than the bosses in either of those games.
Really, what Mitsurugi needed was maybe a handful more people working on it specialising in unique enemy and level designs. That's all it needed to be a genuinely good game. Ironically, passable level design is probably the best thing DmC has going for it.
Gameplay is okay but the game itself is very short. You only get 1/7 of a storyline and it's not well written either. Not even worth pirating.

Yeah, it's not an amazing game and the combat is really the only thing it has going for it. But I'd still say the combat has a better understanding of DMC-style combat design than DmC does. DmC just happens to have more stuff.
DmC did have reasonable level design though. The hookshot traversal was kind of fun, in it's own way, and less irritating than jumping between dropping platforms with bad camera angles that the previous games suffered from.
