Why the fuck would I want to play singleplayer games in age where you have no fucking control over your character or the gameworld? It's just bunch of fucking animations and cinematics, "press X to execute" kind of stuff. Deus Ex 1 everything is crude, and that's exactly how I like it. You talk with some guy for a while, and the next moment you're in midst of a boss fight and there's only 4-6 metres of distance separating the two of you. There's no cinematic where the player makes a barrel roll behind the cover, and returns control to player after he's behind cover, no. Everything you do in that game, from character movement / control to game world is up to player.

Anyone got reccommendations for good single player PSP, PS1, or older PC games? I think the most demanding PC game I'm able to run is F.E.A.R. at all low settings with 800x600 resolution. It looked like shit that way but it was fun to play. I'm currently playing Grand Knights History with english patch and Phantom Brave: The Hermuda Triangle through PPSSPP. I can run those no problem. Grand Knights History seems to have a pretty important multiplayer component and it's getting hard to keep up with the enemies in solo mode. They scale to your level but there's this weird training system and you have to send your characters to the multiplayer part and they can't be brought back. But your later generations can be made much stronger at level 1 than your old high levels through training permits. I've probably fucked it up pretty bad, I'm on the third generation and still haven't made substantial progress. I might need to start it over.

Tech damage is more dependent on the field effect than the character themselves.
The leveling system is pretty obtuse, but you don't need to worry about stats all that much. I'm not sure how to tell which characters are best or not; it's my first playthrough since I was but a wee15-year-old. There's probably tier lists on GameFAQs or something.
I do remember that Glenn (or was it Miguel?) and Razzly get absolutely devastating equip/level 7 techs late game, but you have to play all your cards right since lots of the Level 7 techs/high-tier equipment are very, very missable.

Who said I'm depressed? I said what the guys want, not what they'd accomplish. I want to awaken /v/'s sensibility with my post, but I can see clearly that this will never happen, and most of you aren't even phased by my knowledge. As to explain further, versus multiplayer, the way the West does it, means no stage progression, no scene development, no character arc, etc. It means no narrative, no story; ultimately no immersion at all. I'd rather watch MOVIES than have anything to do with this spastic shit — which is why I am saying that I'd even take JRPGs over them.
I am not even exaggerating: I would rather play a Final Fantasy than a versus multiplayer game, in the long run. Even one of those ridiculous new ones were you go in a straight line the whole game. They could even make you move forward automatically as in Canabalt and I would still prefer them over versus multiplayer games. That's how much I prefer a videogame with a protagonist as opposed to one without one.
Lack of a protagonist is anti-artistic, like those crappy ensemble cast movies that Altman used to make in which nothing exciting ever happens simply because there are way too many "protagonists" jostling for pitiful little screen times. Multiple protagonists is anti-immersive, because it prevents deep identification, which is the cornerstone of immersion (which is to say of art). Maybe Heat works despite having two protagonists (which is still better than the dozen in Altman's films, or the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS in versus multiplayer games and MMOs), but even then, who actually identified in Heat with Hanna? Let's not kid ourselves: we were all the way with McCauley.

Perhaps I'm romanticizing the past here, but but I remember a time when most games were about being challenged to explore new gameplay mechanics, about learning and solving new puzzles, about improving your skills against all types of adversaries and about feeling proud of your accomplishments.
Now they're mostly shiny particle effected vessels guiding any soccer mom caliber gamer through a generic 3rd grade level story where anyone with a brain the size of a steroid shrunk testicle can pretend to be a hero and maintain a fantasy of NOT SUCKING BALLS AT VIDEO GAMES.
