Why didn't anyone tell me there was more news. Someone post the playstation magazine scans, because I can't find them.

Posting the only good bit from the Xbox mag:

>Shipwreck Creek’s cast of freaks let Playtonic indulge in the sort of innuendo-heavy non-playable characters we were always surprised to see make it through Nintendo’s censors. Take, for example, the cloud who’s having a little trouble ‘raining’, not helped by Yooka and Laylee watching him. To solve this perspiration problem, you have to spit ammo seeds from nearby bushes at him. Water seeds make him gush, while ice seeds make him snow. It’s best not to think about it. Seriously, stop it. Another character, Nimble, challenges Yooka and Laylee to a race, referring to them as her ‘racy pair’ in scenes that would make the cast of the Carry On films groan.

- The skeleton girl is called Clara. It also seems to indicate the 'male skeleton' we saw in the ice world screenshot is in fact Clara too -- the hat must be covering her ponytail.

- You race a female character called Nimble in the first world.

- Starting area is called Shipwreck Creek

- Yooka can camouflage during stealth sections.

- A combo combat system makes your moves stronger with each punch.

>It’s even possible to increase the difficulty of existing challenges by altering the world itself. Fill a dry riverbed with water and you’ll create a whole new area to explore. Freeze the lake over instead, and you’ll be able to re-race Nimbleon more slippery ground for a new reward. It’s an inspired approach to backtracking: don’t keep checking in with NPCs to see if they’ve changed their challenges – change the world yourself, forcing the cast to change their side quests with it. New moves can be purchased from Trowzer the snake. In true Jungle Book fashion, Trowzer is a suspicious sort, the kind of snake who’d slimily sell you bootleg DVDs in the darkest corner of the pub. These purchasable moves aren’t compulsory for completing the game, but they do grant access to hidden areas (like the aforementioned sonar blast that uncovers hiddenplatforms).

>One enemy is a pair of bouncing googly eyes, which you have to flatten before they attach themselves to something, such as a crate, which will mutate them into a slightly more menacing threat. A development team whose design approach was so often unfairly criticised as ‘just sticking googly eyes on everything’ embraces that criticism and finds a clever new twist on it. Likewise with Rextro Sixtyfourus, a dinosaur who’s been abandoned since1996, making him a literal relic of the ‘90s. He runs an arcade machine that plays unlockable local multiplayer mini-games.

-"But there's more to each world than it first appears. You'll be able to spend your collectables on extending each of the game's five worlds. Robinson extended the jungle level, which added whole new sections offering tougher platforming challenges. But that's not all these extensions will add. "Expanding a world won't just make it more difficult," says Robinson. "It might completely reinvent it. You'll look forward to seeing what happens when you extend a world. Banjo Kazooie had:
Mumbo's Mountain.
Treasure Trove Cove.
Clanker's Cavern.
Bubblegloop Swamp.
Freezeezy Peak.
Gobi's Valley.
Mad Monster Mansion.
Rusty Bucket Bay.
Click Clock Wood.

It's something that's worrying me too, but I doubt they'll fail to deliver on the concept. Some Banjo worlds were puny, like Mumbo's Mountain and Clanker's Cavern, and the first world seems larger than both combined. The only problem I'm seeing is that it could potentially mean less variety if they don't play their cards right.

Actually what happened, was that Rareware was asking for more money from Nintendo due to game development expenses. At this time however, Nintendo did not have trust in the, due to Rareware having tons of problems within, one of these being the two huge developer groups that with the team. At this point, Rareware had started to lose control of their company, so Nintendo felt it was too risky to depend on them now. The first company that wanted to buy Rare at first was actually Activision. However that stopped when Microsoft got involved. Nintendo was given the chance to buy the company to keep Microsoft from buying it, but they felt that Rare was already falling apart by this point, and that it wasn't worth buying them. Microsoft knew that Nintendo would have to chance to buy them if they just gave more money, so Microsoft simply bought Rare so expensively that Nintendo wouldn't be willing to try to contest it. Microsoft bought Rare for $300 million.

Believe it or not, Rare did not start dying when Microsoft bought them, they actually started dying under Nintendo due to the huge number of people that quit the team due to too strict of working hours, which later on, while still under Nintendo, caused another group of developers to quit Rare as well. Rare was already dying before Microsoft bought them.
>>
>>340016432
And here's a fun little tidbit, that may or may not be true; apparently Microsoft bought Rare expecting to receive the Donkey Kong IP as well, not knowing that it was Nintendo that owns it.
>>
>>340015937
Yaknow, I've been looking at this game a good bit lately and half-tempted to play from the beginning.

http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/06/microsoft_execs_thought_they_owned_donkey_kong_after_acquiring_rare

Its true, they really did.
Microsoft literally only bought them thinking they were keeping Nintendo from getting any more great games.
Only to find out that they spend $300 to buy Rare's failed IPs, IPs where the original creators weren't there to make sequel's for, and less people then they originally had.

On record before Microsoft's restructuring of the company, of the four games they had made by that time (Kameo, Grabbed, Perfect Dark Zero, and Nuts & Bolts) the company had only made $120 million of the $300 million Microsoft paid to buy them.

To this day, the most successful Microsoft Rare era game has been Viva Pinata.

I, too, find this astounding.
>They made a buyout on the premise of what they were getting with no hard fact that could easily be accessed given their position
>>
>>340017132
I'm pretty sure the idea behind buying them was to get an established and beloved developer on board in order to give them a foothold in an industry where they were newcomers to. Even if they never stepped in, Rare was about to get bought up by other companies like Activision or EA, so the idea that MS did it to "steal IPs from Nintendo" is stupid since that was going to happen regardless.

One guy doesn't represent an entire company, especially one as huge as Microsoft.

My understanding is that the Stamper bros. wanted to cash out and offered their stake in the company to Nintendo, but they weren't interested in buying for whatever reason. So they sold their share to Microsoft instead and Nintendo, not wanting to share the company with MS, sold their own share to MS too.

What caused the quality of their games to decline is up for debate but most people seem to think it was MS being overbearing.

They're quills. They cut down on collecting ammo/consumables, while emphasizing core collectables.

Do you guys happen to know what engine are they using to make this game with? Considering it's an indie game it certainly can't be an in house engine, and judging by the screenshots I would say it's either UE4 or Unity.

2 million pounds though, so more like 3 million USD

It's still funny though because Yooka-Laylee looked better during its kickstarter campaign than MN9 does in its final build.
>>
>>340025414
Well Yooka-Laylee actually existed during its Kickstarter campaign, so there's that.
>>
Is this one of the few games were the budget they got actually seems to be put to good use?

The level of effort they seem to be putting into this puts shit like Broken Age and MN9 to fucking shame.

Never played Banjo as a kid but I'm hyped nonetheless.
>>
What world archetypes do you want? We've got Jungle/Sky and Ice.

I want to see a city world, something we never got in Banjo.

Is this game getting a retail release? Because if it is I could see this becoming a big financial success.

The market is fucking starved for child friendly games on XB1 and PS4, of course many parents don't give a shit and just get their kids CoD and GTA. But there are always going to be parents who go up to the counter and asks "Do you have anything suitable for kids?"

And boom, Yooka-Laylee. Perfect kids game. Of course most kids care only about mobileshit and LP's. But there is still a demand for more kid friendly shit as made evident by Mario, and uhmm, Knack's success.
>>
>>340026752
This is the only kickstarter that is being made worth the money it gathered in. I'm kinda sad I didn't back it up back then, I had no money tho :/
>>
>>340027624
40% of the funders were PC backers. It'll do fine just with Steam. PC gamers are starved for this style of game.

but yeah, retail release has been confirmed

Most likely will be. The OP building being Quack Corp sounds about right

Fuck, I need this in my life now. At first I didn't like the designs of the main characters, but they've really grown on me. Are they actually male or female? (as a kid I thought Kazooie was a dude)

It's not even that good of a racing game. The world is really big and empty and there's not much to do. It has amazing graphics and the physics are there. I just don't know why they did what they did with them.
>>
>>340030517
>kazooie

Were you fucking stupid as a kid?
>>
I'm worried about the music. The Grant Kirkhope tracks feel like he's just trying to rip off his Banjo Kazooie work without actually being able to re-use the melodies. It's like when TV shows have their composer write a song that sounds sort-of similar to a famous copyrighted track. I want the game to have its own iconic songs, not inferior copies of old ones.
>>
>>340031465
I don't remember Kazooie using lipstick.

All MS wanted was more meetings about the progress of their games. MS apparently gave them a lot of flexibility when it came to actual work. They were allowed to discuss projects they weren't working on currently, listen to music and browse the internet. They reportedly tried to keep them feeling like they were still working as Rare and not for them personally.

Rocket Robot on Wheels had only 6 levels and still feels like a fulfilling experience. I'm sure they can do the same with Yooka Laylee.

Playtonic aren't the only ones who have knowledge about MS's working conditions. A lot of developers liked working with them.

it's only one song, and it came with the kickstarter. He aimed for the banjo spirit in rawness and hit the mark perfectly. He hadnt even seen the finished world yet, just give it time and listen to the cave/water variants while we wait for more. No one is more excited than he is. You'd think he'd get sick of daily banjo and laylee tweets but he loves them

Being strict with internet browsing for developers is a recipe for burnout and high staff turnover.

Coding solidly, uninterrupted is hard fucking work. A few minutes every hour of browsing helps you not finish the day like a piece of your soul has been drained.

You're justified in your skepticism, but you also need to remember that games are much bigger than they were in the past.

Even if the five world thing is true and final, each world could possible be two or three times bigger than any worlds from B-K.

the first kazooie worlds are pretty abysmal in size. It's like one town in an rpg or something. Clanker only felt big because of the slow swimming and the rest are tiny as fuck.

This looks like twice the size of tooie with galaxy-style linearity in different paths, with a mix of open spaces
