It's inferior to CG at medium-long range and when you are fighting easy-to-stunlock enemies like arachnotron. SG is better at range is well.

Yes, but RL does SSG point-blank damage at any range with a splash and fires much faster, it's a much superior gun.

So, SSG is better than pistol (unless sniping but seriously, fuck pistol), almost always better than SG, usually better than CG, usually worse than RL, not even close to PG and BFG. Seems like fine balance to me, a strong weapon but not even close to the strongest ones.

It didn't really change the way I play much. In DOOM 1 I use the shotgun 90% of the time, switching to other weapons as necessary, like the chaingun or rocket launcher for large groups, chainsaws for demons, fist whenever I've got a Berserker Pack, and the BFG when I absolutely have to kill every mother fucker in the room. The Plasma gun sometimes.

In DOOM II it's basically the same thing, except I use the SSG in place of the shotgun most of the time unless I'm low on ammo or just trying to save it.

Have you fucking played Inferno? Barons aren't a good enemy. They have a deadly melee, a deadly and fast ranged, and are one of the most obnoxious bullet sponges in the game. The Hell Knight is a rebalanced Baron that doesn't have a billion fucking health, so you can get away with putting more Hell Knights in your map without it feeling like a slog, like Inferno does with its Barons.

The additions to the beastiary in Doom 2 are a huge part of what makes it superior to the original, even if the maps are arguably worse.

It's great game too, but I do think Doom 1 is superior, having played them both for the first time. The SSG is a great addition to your arsenal, and the new enemies (minus the Pain Elemental) really fill in the holes in OG Doom's enemy list.

But the levels are so weird and annoying in Doom 2 that it's hard for me to not prefer Doom 1. Doom 1's level design felt more natural, and the progression of episodes felt a lot better. Going from space base, to hellish space base, to hell itself is great. Doom 2 just feels like a random mish mash

Like I said, it's still good, but Doom 1 is the better experience IMO.

Shotgun is for sniping, no other weapon in the game has the long range accuracy it does.
Super shotgun however is better at close ranges, especially when you need to take out several weak enemies at once, like shotgunners and imps.
They're both useful, but you use the shotgun less because there are fewer situations where you need to hit an enemy far away.

The SSG did not make the shotgun or any other weapon obsolete. People who use it all the time for every enemy are bad at the game.

Because Doom 1 is good from start to finish with only a few low tier levels. Doom 2 is good until Dead Simple, then the entire game goes to shit after that.

But the additions to the bestiary help contribute to why the maps are worse. Enemies that are more of a pain to fight on maps that are a slog to get through make for a bad combo.

Maybe it's because I've been playing DOOM for 21 years, but they're really not that bad. It's not that. It's that BD is essentially a different game from classic Doom with wildly different gameplay that simply doesn't work with most maps.
A lot of people unfamiliar with the Doom modding scene saw BD as the hot new way to play the game and cast aside classic gameplay. This combined with what an egotist the dev was stirred a lot of anger in the community.

64 was single player only and never achieved the intensity level of 1,2, or 4. 3 is still worse off than 4 even with its modding tools it has shite multiplayer worse than doom 4. Doom 2 wins because of all the content it has with custom wads.

If you like it, that's fine. I think everyone's had some fun with it, it's just that the mod had the misfortunate of becoming babby's first gameplay mod. Saying you like it is taken as code for "I am very unfamiliar with the modding community for this game." And if that's true about you, I encourage you to look further into Doom modding. There's much, much more out there than Brutal Doom.

shut the fuck up, I grew up on the original games and I have put more hours into them than you ever have and quake and probably every other 90s fps out there. Glory kills were a good addition to the new doom because they introduce a risk to reward element, the only place you can use them haphazardly is the first couple levels. Once you get further in the game you barely pull them off unless you get a really good opportunity just because you have a few frame of invulnerability when you pull one off doesnt save the damage you will take after from demons in later levels. The health you get back is miniscule and unnecessary for the risk most of the time as the game drops health when you are low anyway. Turning off the glory kill glow indication makes them more fun and most low level demons die too fast to the more powerful guns to even waste your time stunning and glory killing them.

You don't get ammo from glory kills. You get 10 health.

And whilst they do take control away from your character (though this is made a nonfactor by certain runes), they allow you to navigate the map much smoother than you normally would be able to. You can use them to reach higher areas, you can use them to cover bigger distances, you can use them to drop down onto a stunned enemy. They're designed to keep you moving in combat.
