>>339980660
It was made before WASD was standard. That's really the problems with most games in the early to mid 90's. Since there wasn't standards yet so for a lot of people it's hard to get into them since how everything controls doesn't line up to how you play nowadays. But once you get an idea on the basic controls you should be fine.
>>339982859
It's also worse than its predecessor.
>tfw been playing older PC/Dos games recently
There's just something special about older PC games with bad control schemes.

No preference. Mostly enjoyed EO for the sense of exploration and building my party. Its also nice when the stats/buffs are somewhat intuitive. Referencing a guide sometimes ain't bad. I just don't like Needing to pour over a guide to explain systema that could/should have been explained in game
>>339981489
you can win the game with the standart party but if i remember correctly the knight is totaly overpowered.
klick enemies until they die.
dont die yourself.
give all of your party members a bow.
dont forget to equip your characters with items. you dont see the item stats but you see the effect of the items on your character sheets (its an old rpg).
save often. this is an oldschool rpg. traps are unfair, monsters are unfair and everyone in the world hates your guts.

and like in every other m&m you need a sorc in your party if this is your first playthrough for cast light and all seeing eye.
>>339983475
MM6 is gridless and easy to get into and you don't have to do a lot of manual reading to figure out the systems. Grimrock 2 is good if you want a modern realtime dungeon crawler. I recommend avoiding the wizardry games until you are more experienced with dungeon crawlers. They definitely require you to read through the manuals and are pretty tough.

Sometimes it's necessary.
Don't know how it is done in Ultima Underworld, but Looking Glass Studios games had a weird default control scheme in games like System Shock or Thief where you had the standard wasd and x for moving backwards which made the whole thing pretty unintuitive. I figure you'd have to use a third party program to rebind the keyboard to something less awkward to use.

Dang looking at all the games from 1998 that was a really good year
>>339985473
Been a while since I've played those games but if I remember A and D was more for turning than strafing. And it really only was around the late 80's early 90's when developers started making games with mouse in mind. So they were still trying to understand how to make games with a mouse.
Honestly I love that. Back when standards wasn't a thing so everyone was trying to make games with their own way of controlling thinking it's the best way to do it.
Ultima Underworld is the best of these sort of games, either that or Wizardy 8

I have never seen someone mention Ishar games on /v/ before. Weird, because I don't think there was anything wrong with them and considering a whole trilogy was made it's bamboozling why it's never recommended or mentioned in rare dungeon crawling threads we have occasionally.

Seriously, though, Demon Gaze is a boring piece of shit with wonky character designs, unlikable personalities, and a really shitty story. I think it came from the fact that they were also working on aircraft simulators and shit.
Speaking of early 2000's PC games, there's one I remember playing as a kid but can't remember what it actually was.
I played it around 2004, I think, not sure when it came out.You had to choose a type (I remember skeletons and elementals were two) for your army/state, build up your city state and go out and conquer other areas. When you beat an enemy you could make units and structures based on your enemy's type. Think it was a 4X game.
Anyone remember it? I've been trying to find it for years but can't seem to remember it.
>>339981798
Innovative dungeon design
More original traps and puzzles
Make it feel like an adventure, not a chore
Include the need for ropes, lanterns, picks, stones, 10-foot pole etc.
Develop a decent combat system that is neither too mechanical nor too arcadey
Monsters that make sense in a ecological view
Interesting loot that makes sense, so no legendary armor in a normal room while the big boss room holds 12 gold pieces
The tech is there to take what was great about dungeon crawlers in the past and elevate them to a better level
>>339992135

Have only one player character, the rest of your party are companions. Then make sure every area is chock full of party banter. This is not a novel idea for dungeon crawlers, but I feel many rpg players are discouraged by how impersonal and soulless your party feels in most dungeon crawlers.

They basically all use the same code base (since the game is open source now)
>>339995178
There isn't really an 'official' server anymore. They released the source code and closed down
Also there's a launcher/updater that lets you choose between the three servers and their configurations. You can also choose between the classic client and the new Ogre client. I still prefer the classic one
>>339994964
>>339992545
SNES of 1-3 is pretty fun. There's a spell that lets you see the map that you are uncovering. PSX of 1-3 has a button for just seeing the map so you don't have to deal with wasting spells.
They are still annoyingly hard. and you might want to save state before leveling because you normally lose stats
