in a normal FPS (rather than a stealth game where it might have silenced pistols), when you've got ammo for everything else, is there any reason to use your pistol?
Depends on the game. Some pistols are OP as all fuck

i use a silenced one in ps2 so I can kill people without alerting everyone around or I'll use one if my primary is a shotgun for anything other than short range.

In some game, (other than the one were pistol are OP or have OP upgrade) the sound, look and/or feeling of the pistol are utterly satisfying.
generally, the pistol is good to pick off weaker enemies to conserve better ammo
Well after youve popped someone with a sniper rifle and theyre then running at you or off round a corner you either die reloading or finish them off with a pistol
It's not a pistol as such, but the correct way to play Dead Space was with the plasma cutter only.

Put the knife on your pistol
They cool as fuck. Same goes for revolvers.
If the game has headshots and you can consistently place targets yes the pistol is very viable.
Unless it's some tryhard game with "realistic" ballistics.

a "normal" modern day fps has most auotmatic weapons having absolutely no accuracy
a pistol in these games will generally ironically have good accuracy, especially on refiring

Even Halo 2. Dual wielding pistol + plasma pistol was better than the famous "noob combo." And dual pistols is surprisingly good against the Flood, if you fire one at a time and fire the other when reloading.

It had too much spread to be worthwhile in 2. Just carry the BR and switch to it after firing the PP.
But since it's technically a pistol, you could count the Plasma Pistol as a viable weapon.
