agreed, the wanton creativity on display in this game is a constant delight. Only other game that comes close to this amount of crazy ideas executed brilliantly is Dynamite Headdy imo

I dunno, Nintendo have backed themselves into a corner with Mario Maker. Now that they've put those kinds of tools in the hands of the public, they can't just release more New Super Mario shitshows that are basically just NSMB level packs with 2-3 new powerups.

I can't guarantee it'll be GOOD, but it seems to me like they're actually going to have to be creative with the next 2D Mario they put out.

I loved this as a kid, but looking back it really didn't feel like a Mario game. Very difficult to speed run, platforming felt too heavy on exploration/switching between vertical and horizontal, and there were a lot more gimmick levels that I would have liked.

That said, there were so many golden ideas in this game that I'm surprised haven't been retapped. Then again, SML1 hasn't been tapped either, and that game had an original villain, flight levels, and a really cool level design.

Things we'll never get in a Mario game again:
>Super Ball
>Tatanga
>Totomesu and Egyptian levels
>Moai heads
>Chai Kingdom
>Sarasaland in general
>Ending levels by ringing a bell
>Bunny ears
>Treetop levels
>Submarine levels
>Crypt levels
>Wario in a mainline Mario game

I would pay hard cash to get any of these in a modern Mario game. Shit, even a Mario Kart.

Sucks to be an older Mario fan, guys
>>
>>339951169
sure they can because MM was laughably limited
>>
I love the level where you get into robo Mario's pants and there are balls everywhere
>>
>>339951169
If they went hard with the creative process in the same vein they did with Mario 3, it could be good. Mario 3 was the exactly right evolution from Mario 1's design: huge maps you could actually explore, a huge selection of items, better co-op, plot is actually more developed...

I would love to be impressed by a Mario game like that again. The closest they've come since, for me, was 3D World. Which I know was a rehash, but I never played 3D Land, so it blew me away as a full package.

I dunno, I could easily see all of them coming back in a game, in the next 5 years even. But it'll be in the New Super Mario engine and it'll be soulless as fuck

Modern Nintendo is like a monkey paw, you'll get your wish but it'll be corrupted beyond redemption

Actually, feeding off of that, I think the correct direction for a new 2D Mario might be to take inspiration from games like SMB3, 3D World, and Galaxy, which are all fairly popular.

>an insane amount of levels that steadily increase in difficulty
>interactive world map
>multiple playable characters
>co-op mode
>gimmick collectables, similar to Power Stars
>fun hidden physics and neat game mechanics
>fun to speed run
>lots of little challenges and challenge modes
>as many references and throwbacks as they can cram in
>interesting new powerups, like a Mole Suit that lets Mario dig, mixed with bringing back some old favorites
>levels vary from short, speed based challenges to big exploration zones and everything in between
>multiple ways to meet the final goal
>Score comes back, Mii Ghosts return, added online functionality
>some sort of level editor a la Mario Maker
>bring back stuff from SMBDX like Boo Racing and crazy stamps, fortunes, etc. for Miiverse functionality
>playable Wario, Waluigi, and Ashley

It'd be good, guys. I swear.
>>
>>339951651
Maybe? NSMBU was a neat game, but I never finished it because it was so damn soulless. But 3D World seriously blew my mind. I loved it.

Got my dad to buy me this thinking it was a Mario game. Don't regret a thing, this game was goddamn awesome. I can't remember how many times I played through it, and I knew nothing about the internet so I had to discover all the treasures on my own.

>there will never be another 2D Wario Land game of the same style and quality as the gameboy/GBC/GBA ones
>>
>they make "Super Mario 3D Land" on 3DS
>it has literally zero references to any of the Land titles
Why was this allowed

>This game literally had shit controls and a shit camera, get fucked
The sooner nugamers realize their precious little games they played as a kid were shit because gaming was moving to a style-over-substance bullshit model for non-gamer trash of the time, the sooner we can kill modern gaming.

EAD at work.

SPD/R&D1 has a different aesthetic as their shit usually bordered on anime-esque or were a bit too Japanese-y at some points. They haven't taken the reigns of a Mario game since Land 2.

Incidentally, it absolutely bugs the shit out of me that Mario Kart games have the audacity to put characters like fucking Baby Rosalina in the game when the extended Mario universe has SO many characters on offer. Where's Nabbit? Kamek? Any of the WarioWare team? They gave us Cranky in MKWii but then didn't bring him back, which just seemed like a dick move.

King K. Rool and Ashley would bring way more hype to a Mario Kart game than fifteen versions of Daisy at different points of her life cycle. It's frustrating

Since you're dancing around it, here's the cast of characters I had on that list that really should get a nod at some point since they've never appeared in a Mario Kart:

>Nabbit
>Bow
>Kat
>Ana
>Ashley
>Dixie
>Fawful
>Motley
>Pionpi
>E. Gadd
>Kamek
>Lina
>Orbulon
>Penny
>Pauline
>9-Volt
>Plum
>Sarissa
>Imajin
>Il Piantissimo
>Tatanga
>Shokora
>Stanley
>Steve
>Vanessa
>Cranky
>Nastasia
>Peasley
>Mona
>Mouser
>Dr. Crygor
>Captain Syrup
>Lubba
>Grodus
>Boom Boom/Pom Pom
>Galrog
>Dribble/Spitz
>Totomesu
>Wart
>Coach
>Denpu
>Rudy
>Foreman Spike
>K. Rool
>Princess Shroob (either)
>Midbus

I definitely would love to see the RPG cast appear too, like Belome, Geno, Mallow, Dodo and Valentina, but I won't hold my breath any longer than I am for the others

This had my favorite Mario Boss fights in it. Maybe my favorite aesthetic also. I guess because it was more in line with the style you'd see in the (future) Wario Land games that would come after it and I fucking love Wario Land games so much more than most Mario games.

Level design in both of these is shit though. Sure the themes are creative, but the obstacle and enemy placement do never interact, making levels just a sum of objects in them. Both games feel like a chore to play.
