How'd you manage to get any good damage value out of theif? I've kept it in because of steals but my theif always feels underwhelming compared to my other melee

I think it depends on which weapon are you using with each character. Don't believe me right away, but I remember having read that axes deal damage in function of the character's attack (in the major part), and bows and guns deal damage in function of the character's dexterity, for example.
Characters with bigger dexterity deal more damage with bows and guns that characters with bigger attack, I guess.
Thief is good with bows, so...
