Why do people complain about how easy games are now when they don't touch the harder difficulty modes?
>>
Because difficulty settings don't make games harder just more tedious.

You don't know me.
>>
>>339941120
Because modern games just buff the damage inflicted by enemies.
>>
>>339941345
>modern games

tell me o sage of video games, did old games do more than buff damage and hp etc when you raised difficulty?
>>
>>339941453
Some do, Thief comes to mind. Most games are just as shit though.

>Quake increased enemy placement
>DOOM made enemies respawn in Nightmare as well as have faster movement and attack speeds
>Bioshock has less random loot to be found
>Resident Evil 4 gives less ammo and no tactical vest, as well as change and increase enemy count and place them in different spots than they were before
>FEAR improves the AI even further, adding more tactics to their arsenal
>Goldeneye adds objectives
>God Hand in fucking general
as you can clearly see, games never did more than raise damage and HP of enemies with the difficulty level
>>
>>339941691
yeah well ive been playing games since 1986 and i can tell you that about 1% of games, all time, do anything other than increase numbers as difficulty goes up.

people even make a big deal out of pickups changing in doom and quake based on difficulty...it wasnt hard to do, it wasnt hard to balance, it comes down to adding/removing a couple flags in the item properties. the amount that its used in the game is very limited too.

game that had the best difficulty setting ever? Virtua Fighter 2 for Saturn. Had a learning mode where you taught the AI by fighting it. Eventually, I crafted an AI that I could no longer beat, and it made me much better in the process. It had tendencies based on things I would do, so they played like you played.

That was in like 1993?...Games totally abandoned stuff like that, but a system as powerful as a calculator of today could do it. What happened?
>>
>Harder difficulty
>Same number of enemies
>Take more and deal more dmg
>No other changes

That's not how you do difficulty. Why not just make every enemy take every single resource I have before I can kill them? That would be pretty hard right?
>>
>>339941330
you're a fucking white male
>>
>>339941453

MGS2: Improved sight lines, more guards patrolling areas, bosses have entirely new attacks that aren't used on normal or easy.

MGS3: Stamina reduces more quickly, radar items taken away, less fake death pills, less ammunition for your guns, enemies have better sight lines and better hearing.

Max Payne 1&2: Normal difficulty means enemy AI will adapt and get easier or harder depending on how well the player is doing. Harder difficulties there's less room for the game to get easier.

DMC 1&3: Entirely different enemy groups and mixings, enemies can now enter demon trigger mode, different attacks from bosses and enemies in general.

>hardest difficulty is locked away until you beat the second hardest difficulty available
>it took four fucking games to finally let people play the hardest mode when they get the game
>>

>moar enemies
>everyone comes bundled with aimbot
>everyone and their mothers are after you
>no place to hideo cause muh radar
>they deal more damage
>they take less damage
>they do not drop ammo

CoD 1 ok let's play it at higher difficulty cause I can

>protect your m8s!
>the entire Wehrmacht ignore your m8s save for some scripted enemies

>protect da bridge!
>Tigers and another bukkake of Wehrmacht sniping you from everything

>protect Pavlov's house!
>fuck sake I'm tired let's activate cheats and se how many of them do care about my comrades camping the house
>train of 20 enemies chasing my ghost
>4 bots actually fighting against themselves in video related manner

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nr2GeWiDrdY

>defend our transport plane!
>get sniped by some wehraboo from the other side of the strip

Play DCUO faggots on forums want harder content, devs made elite alerts and raid, are they hard?No they just kill you in one move, absorb and deal more damage

Play Sniper Elite on Elite settings enemies do act like Twitch plays Pokemon but instead of praising the Helix they snipe you from smgs or do they fucking sidestep double tap dance move and run away

Play Payday 2,we want harder things, they throw at you more sponges, some glitched ninja mall Chuck Norris and scripted flashbangs
>>
>>339942550
So the trend here is Western or non Japanese developers have no clue on how to build a tough but fair and challenging game.
>>
>>339941120
Because making AI in game is too time consuming for AAA devs now.

Back then, harder difficulty meant for some games enemies with different behaviour, different positions, different strategies, etc...

Now it's merely give them more health/nerf your weapons
>>
>>339941453
System shock 2 lowered the amount of cyber modules you got, forcing you to be smarter about how you allocated them

Not all difficulties are tuned well.

The new difficulty setting in the uncharted remastered collection is a good example.

It's not hard to make a game more difficult, it's about making it difficult in the right way. Black Ops 3's hardest difficulty makes you die in 1-2 hits, which is nonsense.

what a piece of shit that game was, thank Christ they went back to gritty seriousness in 3

I was talking about the difficulty selection making shitters feel like children for picking "SUPER Easy" difficulty

SS2 was pretty disappointing but Clawdovic was based and some of the jokes were pretty funny
>>
>>339944716
Thanks to the DOOM video we know why. Journos couldn't even get past the easiest difficulties and even the games themselves were laughing at them.
>>
>>339941120
I find it really rare to go into a thread about a "hard" game where people didn't beat the game by using the cheesiest strategy possible to clear the game. I get a really conflicted feeling about it.

On one hand, good on you. You're free to play however you want.
On the other hand, you cheesed the entire game.
>>
>>339941453
How fucking old are you
>>
>>339943474
Course not. To Gooks challenge equates to, "grind more". It's why they love mobile games so much. Not even Nips are that autistic about grinding.

Games that mock you for being a pussy are the best

Gets you pissed and makes winning on hard more satisfying.

Jesus, is that person playing with a controller for the first time? It seems like he has problems pointing the crosshair where he wants.
I'm not using a controller much myself but that's just embarrassing.

Max Payne 1 on hard is literally one of the best executions of "Hard difficulty" - settings in games. Nearly every step you take has to be somehow "perfect" to avoid insta-death
