seriously though, mandatory hidden walls is really shit level design and contributes to me hating a lot of the levels in doom 2, including the gimmick levels; tricks and traps is the kind of thing I expect a modder to make as a funny joke, or for it to be a secret level made by the devs, not as a fully fledged level in the game

They're both great games on their own.
NuDoom doesn't have that much lasting appeal or replayability though, you complete it and it's over, while as with classic Doom you can get over 20 years of maps/wads/mods to keep you entertained for years.
No harm in playing both, quite frankly. If you can't afford the new one I believe the crack is on great progress, give it a bit more time.

I would have argued with you, but having played KOTOR 2 with the restoration mod, it's so obviously clear it's an unfinished product. It's got much (much MUCH) stronger parts than KOTOR, but overall it doesn't offer the original's whole. A shame, and still beyond me how any publisher could just force an unfinished product out and then sleep at night, even with a hot cake franchise like Star Wars.

I don't know, games got too complex when compared to old FPS, even if they release some kind of full-fledged SDK I don't think people will shit out as much content as they did with classic Doom, even after some years. Also, not sure how the whole multi-platform thing will work out for something like that.
They should start further expanding snapmap, that's for sure.

Because making maps for doom and quake is FUN in and on itself. You could adjust some shit, run the map in seconds and then go back to fixing stuff. The tools were kind of a mess but once you got them down you could do whatever. Quake even had its own scripting language for if you really wanted to fuck with the game logic. They were games made by people who loved fucking with game engines and it showed.
Modern games tend to separate the player from the map building process, they don't thrive on letting the player fuck with the game.
I wonder where the next generation of game devs is even going to come from, when all they can do now are shitty gamemaker pixelfart garbage.
At least UE4 is free to try.

Oh yeah I agree, my point is that I believe creating a map or a mod in something like Doom or Quake is infinitely easier than it would be for a modern game.
I made hundreds of maps for Doom back in the day when I was a dumb kid, and even a few mods for Quake, but some years later down the road I went to try my luck with Q3A (id Tech 3) and shit just got way too real. Still feasible sure, but it really wasn't as accessible.
