What's the appeal of the Souls series?

Good games.

Level design, atmosphere, exploration and reward.

r1 is fun to push over and over again until you've beaten "hard" video games!

You could say the same about any game with combat

your favourite game is just pressing buttons until you win, no skill required
>>
They have actuall gameplay and dont take the control from you every 5 seconds
>>
When everybody plays dark souls it's no longer fun.

babys first "difficult" game.

Dressing up your knight

Hence why Bloodborne is the worst one, no knights, all the fashion is shit and there is very little of it
>>
>>339929513
The same things that's drawn the bulk of vidya consumers since the dawn of the medium.

Bragging rights.
>>
>>339929513
Be a knight on a quest to go stab a bunch of weird monsters.
>>
>>339930712
Be it with a sword, an axe, hammers, a tooth, or even your fists.
>>
>>339930891
Or burn them, or throw lightning at them, or fling crystals into their guts. Shoot arrows at them, throw knives at them, throw poop at them. Do it while dressed in very sensible armour. Do it while dressed in odd mismatched clothing. Do it while naked.

All for the sake of fucking up some weird beasties good.
>>
Its not the difficulty.
Just the lack of handholding.

Its nice to play a game that doesn't assume you are literally retarded.
And the story takes a back seat to the gameplay.
>>
>>339929513

Have you ever met a souls fan that wasn't a fat mentally handicapped drain on society? Souls is the Sonic fanbase of today

People grow out of Sonic though; Dark Souls fans will be on government assistance for life.
>>
>>339931339

So basically it's autism?
>>
Hardest part of those games is going to work every day, putting up with bullshit for 12 hours a day until you have enough money for the computer parts, then working some more for the accesories and then finally after a few months buying the game and playing it. Then you have to work and don't have time to play anything.
>>
sense of wonder

all the sequels blow tho

from cannot do direct sequels
>>
>>339931515

Well it's not because they're very good games or more than 5 kids on 4Chan would play them.

The sense of accomplishment and the fun of exploration.

>>339929513
They're like how we (people born before 1990) remember "old games" (games made before 1995/in or before the fourth console generation). Key word: how we remember them, not how they actually were. So basically they combine an imagined nostalgic difficulty and simple but deep mechanics with the incredible design and production capabilities of modern video games.

>>339932037

>one autist is representative of an entire fanbase.
>>
>>339932196
i am simply providing a case to negate the claims of all sonic fans growing out of sonic fangaying :)
>>

There's is a medieval armor in Bloodborne though.
>>
>>339930891
Oh, and even some shields, or even go dual-shielding.
>>
>>339932923
Wow, ONE whole armor?

That's so great how does Muhzaky do it
>>
>>339931339
I think the lack of dialogue and interaction drives this. It's heaven for an introvert autist.
>>
>>339933230

Since the post was about fashion I suppose he was talking about armor. There is one whole armor in BB, so the post is objectively incorrect.

I like Souls as much for what it doesn't do as what it does.

>>
>>339929513
It's the fifa of the fantasy world

a new game comes out every year, it's all basically the same game with minor modifications.

there's no appeal to it actually, just people who think that 1hit kill monsters=difficulty, rolling around=good combat, dark and edgy scenery=atmosphere, and path a/b/c=exploration

It was half price on the US psn a couple of weeks ago bud.
>>
Everything there is in these games feels important. NPCs are so scarce you're actually thrilled when you find one and you pay attention to them.

Same with items: most treasures are unique in the whole playthrough so it really makes you want to explore a place. In open world RPGs most equipment you get is Diablo-like shit where everything is made obsolete by a higher damage output
>>
>>339934869
Yeah i heard too late about it sadly.

Did the servers for it get shut down too?
>>
>>339929513
3rd person ARPG that doesn't restrict you to old-school "classes" that rewards exploration and literally gitting gud.

I hated Dark Souls 1 back when it first came out because I kept dying in the asylum. Picked it back up a year later on steam and it's been my favorite series since.

Although after 3 games it's gotten a bit stagnant. I'm waiting for the PS4K to come out so I can get bloodborn for something similar, yet new.
>>
>>339935270
The US server was fucked for a bit, maybe because of the domain running out or something. They are back up now, I've been playing it for the first time and there are a suprising amount of messages/ghosts/bloodstains.
>>
>>339935439
>>339935270
I should add I think the US server is a lot more active which is why I bought that version even though I'm Aussie.

They're essentially modern day Castlevania games (especially Bloodborne). They remove all of todays AAA tripe and bullshit (hand holding, cinematics every 5 minutes, no boss battles because "it's too gamey") and say to hell with it while giving you a pure gaming experience focusing on level design, boss battles, replayability and combat with a compelling lore/backstory to be found if you put the effort in. No bullshit QTEs, no hamfisted generic plot line about "saving da world", no removing control from the player at frequent intervals, none of that.

I don't expect /v/eddit to understand (not when people here unironically like Witcher/Last of Us and even Uncharted games).
>>
>>339935748
If you've played the other games, going back to rolling locked in 4 directions feels clunky, other than that it holds up fine
>>
>>339929513
overcoming twitch reaction and rewarding you for it
aesthetic are amazing
heavy weapons feel heavy on dealing and receiving end
>>
>>339934850
I can understand the middle two appealing the casual audience, but sickdark doesn't really come to mind when concerning Souls atmosphere.
>>
>>339929513
It's one of the few games where I can play as an arthurian-style knight without a DARK BROODING SPIKEY HATE backstory looking at you Dragon Age but at the same time, doesn't beat me over the head with historical accuracy.
I want to engage in horrible pvp while wearing a toilet paper tornado, I want to kill giant undead dragons while screaming "Deus Vult!"

>>
>>339936029
this desu
the only people who don't understand the souls popularity are the people who've never really played them enough
it's certainly above your averge level gamer to understand

>>339929513
Emergent storytelling, challenging bosses, great aesthetics, and the fact that they typically only explain basic combat to the player and leave everything else to be figured out.
It's a bit overrated, but when games nowadays have cutscene after cutscene filled to the brim with story and dialogue, it's a bit refreshing to have a game where you figure out the story entirely by interacting with the environment, reading item descriptions, and talking to NPCs.
>>
>>339940657
Depends on which of the archstones you get to next, you can do them in any order
>>
>>339940657
Have you played Dark Souls/Bloodborne? If so, most likely never.
>>
>>339940657
It's get's harder when you get to later areas, but it's the easiest Souls game so it's only really difficult if you're too young to have owned an NES.
>>
Real-time action RPGs with generally good level design, memorable boss fights, nice aesthetics, great soundtrack, build variety, plus both co-op and PvP multiplayer that support the single player experience (at least in DeS and DaS3 where PvP items are accessible early and reward you instantly with full HP form on success).

The themes are cool
Mashing R1 and O is brain dead but fun combat
Dressing up and leveling up your character is fun
>>
>>339929513
you're thrust into an unknown world that reveals itself as much as you wish, but you can also treat it as if it has no story. the level design and game design has no equivalent; there are few games that respect you as an individual such as this. there are no forced tutorials, minimal cutscenes used only to introduce things, and the gameplay is immensely rewarding due to how it's a game of learning from your mistakes and overcoming frustration. there are no instructions on what to do, nor is there anyone telling you to go and defeat the boss; everything done is entirely of your own volition. there are no quest markers; npcs are few and sparse and and do not revolve around you (except for dark souls 2).

>>339934008
like this anon says, the series excels in what it doesn't do.

Everything you said was correct though.
>>
>>339943835
You can't 'mash' R1 and O considering the both consume stamina, and without stamina you can't do either and you'll get swiftly rekt. This isn't The Witcher anon, there are actual consequences for spamming attack and dodge like a retard in these games (well maybe not Bloodborne).
>>
lets retards think theyre playing a hard game.
>>
>>339946105

They're pretty hard mi familia
>>
>>339929513
