>>339928535
>Why the fuck does it look like Earth?
Because GW founders all either had history or geography degrees and they had to do something to validate their life choices.
And that theory has long been declared non-canon along with the "40K is set inside an Imperial wizard's snowglobe." one.
>>339925930
>>339927461
Only because our northern hemisphere ended up with most of the land by sheer chance. It's not a problem, just it's what we're used to and thus can be changed in a fantasy setting but hardly anybody does.
I'm actually thinking of making a mapfor an RPG i seldom plan on making. What is something cool to base the shape of the map off of? How do I make it as cozy as possible?
>>339928585
LOL wut? Are you fucking blind? There are green plains/forests, deserts, snow continents, volcano, swamps, industrial cities etc.
>>339928484
I mean, some areas are just really dense and filled with stuff and then there are areas that have absolutely no purpose to anything besides maybe a few quests. The swamp in the east, the mountain range in the west, the snowy mountains in the north, Karamja is just one giant blotch of filler that was a giant inconvenience to travel through.
Like I said, besides quests, there is never really an incentive to visit certain areas, because they hold nothing of value or are not appealing for levelling up.
>>339928774
Well, they completely switched genre
>>339928812
My point was that map designers are aware of it, and don't change it in maps, because it would needlessly confuse audience, even if just briefly. You don't want your map, the one thing to convey your world to the audience at a glance, to be confusing more than clearing it up
dunno if this counts

Draw a pangea and start from there, don't go making a gorillion continents right off the bat.
>>339928919
>cata version
plz no
>>339928706
Well, north is north in our world because of the magnetic pull. So the chance is, theoretically, whatever the fuck because it's a fantasy game.
In all honesty, things being cold to the north when it comes to map making is also convenient because mountains are cold and mountains are tall so you'd naturally want to put them behind all the short things.
>>339928872
I'm saying what you call "inconvenience to travel through" is their purpose. You want things to be not really dense? You got to place some filler in between. You don't want filler? Got to make things really dense then.
>>339928919
Sucks I never really got to experience cata questing considering how stupidly fast you leveled when dungeon queing
>>339928919
I do like how it shows how odd a lot of wow's world design is
I understand that it is a fantasy game, but the environments are so unrealistic and have so little gradual change that everything just looks silly
>>339928907
one's an action game with a single protagonist, and the other is also one. The only things that changed are the visualization and the capability of the hardware. It's a general theme, even. 2D landscapes tend to be large scale and open, 3D landscapes tend to be rooms and tunnels, at least old ones. Sandboxes mostly addressed the issue
Cozy but for all the wrong reasons
>>339926419You are now hearing the main theme of the game in your headmanually
>>339925336
>Massive wall
>The Breach
That'd make for a pretty awesome dungeon, actually. A gigantic, ancient wall, made long before the start recorded history. Nobody knows why or how it was built, and nobody knows what vast power made the giant Breach that's the only way to get through it.
>>339929182

>>339927932
It was the canon one up until the end of WHFB.
That being said, they didn't really do much with the land east if the Old World. You see bits of bobs now and then, but not all that much.
>>339929023
>north is north in our world because of the magnetic pull
the difference in climate is caused by the sun. If you (as a culture, I mean, not you personally) understand earth to be spheric and rotating, you automatically understand there's an axis, and two points where that axis enters the sphere. The axis happens to be angled in such a way, that these poles get the least sun and are coldest. A single culture usually does not span the full range from pole to pole, but just a section. So as culture you will definitely have an "origin" (the closer pole), and a cold-warm gradient. The only choice left is whether to place that origin on top of a map, or at its bottom. I consider it very little for it to be on top, which is why I suggested a southern hemisphere culture to simply declare the south pole "up" and the same cold-warm progression would be the result
All of these things are fairly earth specific, but the result is an intuition of "up is cold". So even if fantasy maps are not limited to spheres, same axial tilt and all that, that intuition is still within the audience, and needs to be acknowledged. It does not have to be respected. Good writers can, and will, subvert expectations. But you can only subvert what you're aware of. So, yeah, know your audience
>Geneforge 1
Must be one of my favorite games of all times. Geneforges 3-5 had segmented maps and I hated that. Nothing beats the sheer joy I felt when I saw that map. It felt like I'm an explorer set on an adventure to rediscover ancient lost island.

That's thinking from a business man's perspective. Sometimes you gotta take those expectations and twist it to make something memorable.
And what's there to get confused about? What is there that's lost if a person looks at a map and has to pause for a second and say 'wait, what?'

at a certain distance, yes. They're different in nuance obviously, but enough to change a game's map? In particular since there's nothing in SR that requires a room + tunnel map
>>339929460

>>339929581
>Sometimes you gotta take those expectations and twist it to make something memorable
In order to twist, you have to be aware of them, and you have to be aware of the resulting reaction. Whether you want that reaction or not, is your decision. See also >>339929451

Geneforge 1 and 2 are my favorite RPGs of all time. I wish Vogel would remake 1 & 2 with all the gameplay upgrades that the series got by Geneforge 5. The old engine used in Geneforge 1 & 2 doesn't seem to like my computer much either since my FPS drops to a crawl when my cursor hovers over any UI elements, destroying any desire I have to replay these games.

I rather Vogel not touch Geneforges, he ran out of creativity juices years ago and the remakes of remakes he keeps releasing reek of stagnation. I played Geneforge 1 several years ago, way past it's prime time, so you gotta understand there's no nostalgia glasses, when I say that Geneforge is perfect as it is. The UI is ugly but functional, combat is serviceable, I like the grafix style and writing is the best there is.
Imo it's a way better cRPG than Planescape, as gameplay is much better.

You've probably left the thread, but the swamp area has barrows, the slayer tower, agility course, farming patch, slayer master and a ton of quests.
The distance between a bank and barrows is important to stop it being too efficient, and you unlock shortcuts through the swamp through quests (The boat, ectophial, burgh de rott bank).
And if this is rs3 and not osrs, it also has an endgame boss.
I agree that some areas are just kind of filler, but morytania is not one of them.
Try the elf area (though apparently thats now important in rs3).
