Eh, characters take much more time to develop than courses so you gotta give them leeway for that.
Not only do they have to make a character, they have to balance it around all the other cast of characters and gimmicky stages.
The stages that came with the characters were also pretty great, though they were pretty lazy when bringing back the classic stages.
Mii Costumes were overpriced however, but it's not like they change gameplay at all.

Here's the thing. Smash Bros launched with 51 characters.
So you could say that each character is worth about 1,2 bucks at most, and thats not even counting stages and other shit being made.
You overpay greatly when you buy the character DLC.
Only the stages push up their worth a bit, but its still not in relation to the core content the base game offered.
Mario Kart DLC offers you MUCH more of the core content in comparison.

Those characters don't all play the same though.
Not including the verterans, all of the new characters play quite differently from the main cast of characters.
In MK8, the new characters and karts while cool, function like all the other karts.
Only the courses (which are all awesome might I add) really took alot of time and effort to make.
Also don't forget the licensing that Nintendo had to go through to get characters like Ryu, Cloud, Mega Man, and Bayonetta, whereas Mario Kart DLC that were other Nintendo properties could easily be used without hassle.

I mentioned the courses on purpose because the courses take the most effort to make in MK and are pretty much the core content.
I could mention the characters but those are really mostly just cosmetic.
In Smash Bros its pretty much the opposite, where the characters are the most important part.
But either way, MK DLC offers MUCH more for the price you pay.
I'm also not buying the licensing shit because characters like Corrin only cost slightly less than characters like Bayonetta and Cloud who also come with a stage.
You overpay for Smash DLC. Its a fact. They do it because people are willing to pay 5$ per character every now and then.
Personally I think paying more than half the price of the core game for less than 20% of what the base game offered is bullshit.
MK did it right.
