Whatever happened to seeing full sentences/speeches that characters could make in RPGs?

Because if you read it word for word, you won't want to sit through your character saying it. They might as well not even record the audio.

We don't need no reading'

Reading entire monologues is usually lame, doing it during actual gameplay like FFT is always dope though
>>
Blame Bioware and their shitty speech wheel, reading is clearly not necessary in RPGs.
>>
>>339829073
All that readin takes away time I could stabbin.
Do you even RPG?

You skim through the lines and then hear your character say it word for word
>>
>>339829864
If the dev isn't good at truncating the intention of the line, then yeah, I'd want to see more of it, but CDProjectRED is actually pretty good at it. I never had an issue with the choices Witcher 2 and 3 and I always felt the intention was totally clear.

Games like L.A. Noire could have used a little more than just the simple 3 choices.

RPGs shouldn't have a voiced protagonist.

>They might as well not even record the audio.

Boy, that sure would be a shame.
>>
Trading monologues is bad writing.

Just because something is long does not mean it is well written.
>>
>>339829073
Nothing really changed except games became more cinematic. Lots of text is a late '90s thing or more specifically, a Black Isle/Obsidian thing.

>>339830881
>books are bad writing
you heard her, folks. pack it up and burn the libraries.
>>
>>339831036
Do you really think that an entire book is equivalent to character dialogue choices in an RPG?

What the fuck?
>>
I would welcome a no-nonsense no audio option to be honest. Audio generally drags things down. Especially the pacing.

No audio at all would even e better given how audio limits the choices you're given.
>>
>>339831172
you said "trading monologues". if you call the PC's text in games like, say, Morrowind, VTMB, New Vegas, or the OP image monologues, then you
>>
>>339831036
Anon, characters trading monologues is not that common in books either. Some authors write like that, but it's more like a particular style than the norm for fiction.
>>
>>339831303

See? That's what happen when you have truncated lines to make up for space limits.
>>
>>339831303
The OP image is bloated and could be cut down. Imagine saying that in real life. It's not well written.

Not what I said.

But we do know from the developer's mouth that audio recording leads to less dialogue options, less consequences and a far less agile development process which prevents the amendment of imperfections or addition of good ideas past the recording stage.

If only for that I'd say fuck it.

Add the terrible pacing, the issues of tonality vs content, and the problems borne of truncation. And yeah, I think the genre really could do without. Let' keep that shit in games that are meant to be spectacles. Keep your Uncharteds segregated.

I haven't played Fallout 4.

Is it really that fucking awful?

>>339832336

Same.

Abigail wasn't an innocent, but she sure as fuck wasn't as twisted and evil as they were. Fucking Mikul. I can't remember if we get to kill him later on or not.
>>
>>339832419
That was actually a really great line, and I felt the intention was conveyed very well. I'm actually surprised people didn't pick up on that, but then again, maybe others don't read and understand English as well as I do. Even so, I don't feel a developer should dumb down the intention reads to just be the full script so that people who can't read into the language can feel better about what they're playing.

A lot of the enjoyment I get from picking the dialogue is discerning and understanding intent, which is actually the most important part of the conversation in these games, and having that right up front in Witcher 2 is a great lesson for players.

The issue is that the alternative is this:
>select "I do disagree..."

Am I the only one that likes the shortened sentences? It has to be of a specific quality though.

Like if your choices are like on fallout 4 which tell you almost nothing about what youre going that, thats bad. Really bad.

But in say, Mass Effect where they have a generalized sentence that then expands into more dialog when you choose it, i think thats fine.
>>
>>339832279
Maybe if you had like 20 choices to pick from in these dialogue trees, it would matter the content.
As it is, you are only picking from at most 4, and only 2 almost every instance. In that case, it doesn't matter the content so much, because you're making a choice of intent or tone, which truncation suits very well.

At least Carmen can get a happy ending with Vincent.
>>
>>339833042
Instead of hypothetical, you should bring up actual examples.

Games like Fallout 4 and LA Noire do fail because they usually limit it to just one word or two, but Wither 3 is more verbose and specific in its truncation, only occasionally deviating from that to offer impact to the choice, aka the "Very Funny" line.
