SaGa games are known for somewhat obscure gameplay aspects that you hsve to figure out on your own unless you ise a guide. In this game, Humans grow by drinking potions to boost HP, Strength and Agility, Mutants grow based on actions in battle, kinda like in FF2, and Monsters eat meat that foes sometimes leave behind which trasforms them into different monsters.
The Romancing SaGa games are also pretty open ended.

Romancing SaGa 2 is gonna get it's vita port worldwide release pretty soon. It finally got translated recently . . . For iphone and android. The series wasnt as huge as final fantasy it was aways more experimental and because of that more unique. You should play some of the SaGa games if you like odd jrpgs.

at least 2 humans. its expensive, but you can pay to max out their stats. however theres only 2 good single target weapons in for the endgame (glass sword and masamune) so a 3rd and 4th become less useful.
mutants have some utility but are really unreliable to build up. monsters are ok, but can shift from being really useful to useless in a flash, and there isn't really a decent monster class to use on the final boss, whereas a mutant can carry nuke or cure.
