zestiria is actually what your looking for though, sorey's big character arc is coming to the realization that you cannot save everyone from malevolence and that the only way to truly save some people so far gone is to outright kill them, zestiria actually is one of the sadder entries in the series its just unfortunately most of the "emotional" moments dont have the pull they are trying to, the ending still got me misty eyed though
zestiria has problems but it has alot of moments that save the game from being a waste, its a shame it was as messy as it was cause it could of been great but its also no where near as bad as others build it up as, frankly legendia (sorry legendiabro) and innocence are much worse

It really should have focused on Brave Vesperia having to do tasks and complete missions in order to become one of the big political powers in Dhangrest.
The big final confrontation being a heavy focus on Yuri and Flynn's methods of peace, how they differ, and ultimately how both ideals can live alongside each other.
They sort of did that, but instead of having something fairly grounded, they shat the bed and suddenly "giant sky blob, fuuuuuuuck kill it quick!!!!"

There are plenty of characters that are writing in a more organic and better way than Luke in Tales
Hisui, Beryl, Karol, Leon (byronic as fuck), Jade, Rutee and yes, Yuri himself for most of the part.
