For the initial part of the game, I agree. The atmosphere and progress is god-tier. However, the game falls flat with its skill book. Fucking impossible to ever get what you want (golem), and having to find multiples was agonizing. I can't recall how many times I uselessly reloaded a map to wander to the witch hoping to find a certain skill book.
Also, by the time you reach succubi, the slow run speed reaches critical mass in frustration.
I love Diablo 1, but it is certainly not a better game than Diablo 2.

Well, one post is talking about ME and the other about Diablo. I'm neither poster, but I can explain the Diablo one.
Diablo 1 had an intense, oppressive atmosphere complete with butchered corpses stripped naked and impaled every step of your journey and compounded by a slower run speed that was exactly matched by your enemies. The game is a dungeon crawler in every sense of the word and pioneer in the genre. It's quest discovery system, the process of needing spell books to learn magic even for sorcerers, the slow unveiling of just how fucked that town is as literal Hell is invading it - it is a marvelous blend of atmosphere and gameplay.
D2, however, is much more grand in scope, more adventurous than confined. It's atmosphere has completely changed, as has its gameplay mechanics, which have become far less tedious and much more fun. I prefer Diablo 2 by far, but it is in essence a different style of game from D1. There is literally nothing wrong with prefering the triumphs of D1 over the triumphs of D2. I'll argue my points against them, as in >>339808358, but preferring D1 has nothing to do with "it's older so it must be better".
