I just think MOTHER is the story of Maria and Giygas. Without either of those two elements, it's not exactly MOTHER. 2 is literally called Giygas Strikes Back, and then 3 is just MOTHER3.

The first Mother is legitimately fucking great. I'll never understand why babbies cry about it.
The story, music, atmosphere, characters, exploration etc. are all top notch. Sure the gameplay is fairly primitive, and even bullshit(unless you play Mato's GBA patch, in which case you have no excuse to have trouble with it), but it does so many things right to make up for it all. You don't actually play Mother purely for gameplay, anyways. You play it for everything it so gracefully combines.
It's the one I in many ways found to be the most engaging, and I legitimately regret listening to the memes and not starting with it.

I imagine people just find it rough being used to the convinces found in 2 and 3. I'm playing 1 right now, grinding Ninten in magicant, love it. I admit its a bit annoying on replays however, this is my sixth playthrough. The version I'm using is a nes version that uses tomato's translation, I would consider it the definitive version.

I wouldn't have such a problem with it if its pacing wasn't some of the worst in RPG history.
You either need to emulate with turbo on or use a hack to get any enjoyment out of it. Every 10 minutes the game slows down to a halt as you grind for experience just to be able to move around in the next area. I still haven't finished it because every time I tried I got fed up and just wanted to play EarthBound or Mother 3.
It isn't even challenging. You walk around in a place with reasonably levelled enemies. When you get in an encounter, you mash A. Repeat until you level up a few times. It's unnecessarily unbalanced, mindless, and not fun.
