>AMD has revealed the Radeon RX 480 graphics card - its debut GPU based on the new Polaris graphics technology. Set to go on sale on June 29th priced at $199, the RX 480 has been validated for premium VR PC gaming and should offer ballpark performance equivalent to GTX 970/980 and AMD's own R9 390/390X.

>The technical make-up of the card reveals 36 compute units with a total of 2306 shaders, paired with a 256-bit memory interface. According to AMD we should expect to see cards released with either 4GB or 8GB of GDDR5, and a theoretical maximum of 256GB/s of bandwidth. We should expect to see HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 support for high-end 4K functionality, and DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4 is also confirmed, along with HDR. The card has a 150W TDP - a massive reduction from R9 390 and 390X.

>Missing so far from AMD's specs are the all-important clock speeds. This can usually be worked out via the TFLOPs figure, but here AMD is being quite vague, saying only that over five TFLOPs of computational power is on tap in RX 480. However, leaks are suggesting a 1266MHz boost clock, up significantly from the 1000-1050MHz found in the existing R9 390 and 390X. This, combined with architectural enhancements, may help to make up the computational deficit with AMD's older equivalent products, which featured 40 and 44 compute units respectively.

>It's also worth noting that - clock-speeds and resultant TFLOPs aside - the specs for RX 480 are point-for-point a match for the GPU in Sony's upcoming PlayStation Neo, all but confirming that the Sony mid-gen console refresh uses both Polaris technology and the new 14nm FinFET chip manufacturing process.

No idea, but this will be a huge jump from the current console specs. Finally 60fps and games that don't look like ass
>>
>>339773491
No, they will just push the graphics even further. 25 fps is not a console limitation is a design choice by developer who push the graphics until the machine cant handle it.

This just means more graphics, never more fps.
>>
>>339773769
Not really, the CPU is a massive bottleneck
>>
>>339773943
Most games aren't CPU dependent anymore
>>
>>339773053
AMD is always the choice for console makers since they buy the cheapest parts. Sony just happened to luck into when AMD is going through a resurgence, it wasn't anything more than looking at the newest cheapest card and choosing that for their upgrade.

That being said, the article only postulates that Sony is using the 480 and original PS4 owners are going to want to hope that they aren't. The 480 is head and shoulders better than a GeForce 980, comparing it to the GPU in current PS4s reveals a massive performance gap. If games are being optimized for the PS4K then original PS4s are going to have a very hard time running them. Forget "silky smooth 24 FPS", you'll be lucky to get 15 FPS in new games on your PS4.

By the way, does anyone know what kind of OS the PS4 uses? Is it based on Linux? Because if it is then we could see a lot of PC ports using Vulcan instead of DX12 and I could finally switch from windows to a good linux distro.

>Forget "silky smooth 24 FPS", you'll be lucky to get 15 FPS in new games on your PS4.
They could be aiming for native 4k on the new consoles. That would scale right for the amount of power they have over the old machines.
>>
>>339773769
most games will be designed for original PS4 and get slight better visuals for Neo, they arent going to push the hardware if it means the original suffers hard

It's BSD. But Vulkan will run on BSD too.

If all they do to take advantage to take advantage of the PS4Ks specs is up the resolution they're going to see some pretty unhappy customers. Most people don't have TVs that support 4k resolution, and even if they did resolution increases give diminishing returns as you go up. People aren't going to see the big difference when their TV only does 1080p and they're sitting 6 feet away.

>>339775164
For the sake of the early adopters I hope you're right. Personally, I don't trust Sony. If we see a price point on the new PS4K that makes a profit for Sony with every unit then you can be damn sure that they're going to treat the PS4 like the retarded older brother, especially i you see Gamestop offering some sort of big trade-in bonus for trading an original PS4 for the new model.

I would like for PS4K to use a RX 480 because it will lead to people making games for higher end hardware so PC ports will look better, but you're deluded if you actually believe that is happening. The RX cost will cost $200 when it comes out, the PS4 costs $350/400 depending on what bundle it comes with. Sony is not going to release a console this late in the generation where they take a loss on it (which they would be doing if they used a $200 GPU, considering they'd still have to pay for all the other parts). Of course, the PS4K could cost more than the regular PS4, but I'm really doubting that, I'd expect a current PS4 price drop and the PS4K being the same price as the current PS4.

If Sony pours all their money into the GPU they've created a very unbalanced system. It's pretty much already confirmed that the CPU in the PS4.5 is basically the current PS4 CPU running at a slightly higher clockrate, the same AMD architecture but running at 2.1Ghz rather 1.6Ghz of the current PS4.

AMD's Jaguar architecture is garbage already. On PC AMD doesn't even show their own benchmarks for their new GPUs with their own GPU technology because it's outclassed by Intel stuff from 5 years years. Basically anytime the CPU is under high load the GPU will get bottlenecked to fuck and back.

AMD's been working on a new CPU architecture called Zen. It's supposed to have have Haswell IPC and release in late 2016. If it's going to be good or not who knows, the current main AMD architecture Bulldozer which their current CPUs are based on was supposed to be the Sandy Bridge killer, but ended up not only getting Stumped by Sandy Bridge but even managing to have a regression in per core IPC compared to AMD's own previous architecture so it could end up being shit just like Bulldozer was. Even if it's good, it'll be too late to go into PS4 because PS4K is probably about to enter production around now.

An APU is a marketing term by AMD. It stands for Accelerated Processing Unit. It refers to their CPUs and iGPUs which AMD considered to perform so well in comparison to Intel's iGPUs in games that they should have their own name.

They were better than Intel iGPUs in older years, but Intel has basically tied them at this point. Both of their iGPUs are shit anyway compared to real graphics cards

Do you honestly think a manufacturer like sony is paying $200 a gpu? On top of that Sony and AMD have a partnership.

The PS4K using a 480 is incredibly likely.
>>
>>339781815
Not really. Sony wants the PS4/4K platform to play the same games. The current PS4 GPU is so shit in compared to the RX 480 that current PS4 owners would get fucked in the ass.
>>
>>339774197

The new PS4 is supposed to be used mainly with VR.

This spec look good for VR.

What I believe is going to happen is that there won't be much difference between normal PS4 game versions and the PS4K one, except that the PS4 won't have VR games.

>>339773053
>Where were you when Sony won YET AGAIN?
the console war? is that something to be impressed by?
>>
>>339782016
I read somewhere that the new PS4 is supposed to be able to run the VR headset without an external processor, in which case it would need to massively out-power the original PS4 even if that extra processing power is "useless" (aside from ensuring you hit the framerate cap in any GPU bound game) in a lot of games.
>>
>>339782016
Yea, you're right. However I doubt Sony would pass on such an opportunity to totally blow out the market with an extremely powerful console at a cheap price point.

Yea, it would fuck over current PS4 owners, I am one myself; but fuck them. I'll totally drop another $400 if it means I get an actually good graphics card. Bloodborne would jump to 60fps EASILY and all it would take is a small patch file.

Fuck anyone that can't afford something like this. It's a huge step in the right direction for a measly 400$.

This doesn't change anything for PC players. Every game released for the years and years will be still be bottlenecked by PS4/XboxOne in terms of development.

Every multiplatform game for the next 6-7 years will be built for the ground up for PS4/Xbox One.

For developers, the PS4.5 and Xbox Scorpion are just a hassle. Because now they have to develop their game for PS4/Xbox One, then port them upward to PS4.5 and Xbox Scorpion with increased resolutions/framerates, and then port them upwards again to the PC market.

>with increased resolutions/framerates

Both Halo and DOOM use dynamic resolution scaling, so in the future more games will probably just do that since that means there is no manual config to make it scale up to the new hardware. Framerate is just a matter of hitting the cap they already have consistently, most games already have dips on the current models that wont be there simply because the new GPU is stronger. I expect 90% of "ports" to the new models wont actually change anything and simply rely on the extra horsepower doing its thing, and the remaining 10% (which will be brag pieces like Uncharted) will bother to add new textures, enable higher quality effects, etc.
>>
>>339782294
VR is a gimmick though. Very few games will use it compared to normal flat screens Making a console around it is a stupid idea. Going from the current PS4 GPU to a RX 480 is basically a change you'd typically see in a generation change considering that RX 480 price range GPU is far above what you typically see in a new console at launch.

The RX 480 is basically the same performance as the GTX 980 and R9 390X which currently cost over $500 3 years after the original launch of the PS4 which is more than total launch price of the PS4. If the current PS4 GPU can play the typical PS4 game at 30 FPS 1080p, the RX 480 would be like playing the same game at 100 FPS. It's a huge improvement. Either the PS4K games will be gimped so PS4 isn't too shit in comparison or PS4 will basically be forced into upgrading.
>>
>>339783120
I think they will gimp the ports somehow.

Framerate, resolution something.

But i think that shit is getting pushed way too soon, sure having more power is good, but damn they have like no excuse.

Nintendo have WiiU or 3ds as excuse for NX at least.
