But simply having a system that can handle ports of other games doesn't mean those games will be ported. Remember that the GameCube was more powerful than the PS2 and could handle ports from that system. And even some Dreamcast games. But few of them ever got ported because third parties still wanted to avoid Nintendo and their higher publishing costs. Since then, Nintendo has lowered publishing costs and even offered to wave publishing costs for third party games. But third parties are still avoiding them.

For what purpose at this point? Literally the only thing that's kept nintendo relevant is their first party games. Third party titles made sense back in the day when consoles were different enough that there could be no straight port of any games between them. Thing is that developers aren't interested in developing for consoles that have a different structure too them, which is the reason ps3 had very few games in the beginning and probably also why Wii U barely has any third party support.
So their only option regarding third parties would be to cave in and make a console that's pretty much the same as the ps4 or the xbone, but then why not just get one of those instead?

a really good new exclusive horror IP. what drew me to the gamecube was Eternal Darkness and the fact that Resident Evil 4 was exclusive to it as well as all the resident evils being released on it. The big push when everyone and their literal grandmother was buying a Wii was in its first 2 years. And it has literally no third party games until after 2 years. It sold with just Wii Sports.
The reason? Endless free marketing on the news, TV shows and every other form of media. This is why Nintendo named the next system Wii U, expecting the same free publicity and hype. But it backfired. Because Nintendo didn't realize the hype for the Wii was the same as the iphone. It was something 'new'. And like the various new models of the iPhone, the Wii U didn't do as well.
