You can really go crazy with team building, either go with the most irritating team(Choi, Chang, Billy) or go waifu team(any female character). Its up to you.
Of course picking the characters you like also means you need to get gud with those three. It is better to get gud with four or even six characters(or in Bala's case, all of the characters) so you can switch your subs and mains alternatively thus giving you more flexibility.

ALmost every good KoF player knows the majority of the cast and can play them on a basic level. Learning characters is much easier than most games. If you're planning to be competitive you really should be able to be at least competent with the whole viable cast, even if you have a team you prefer. Xhao Hai for example can play every character in most games well, though in tournament he'll usually only play a handful
