If your group likes Doom 1/2, you can get a fuckload of mileage out of user-made WADs and mods. Though it's not the best port for SP, Zandronum is what most use for online play since it's the most advanced multiplayer source port that doesn't have fucking shitty netcode.

I recently picked up Alien Swarm, f2p experimental Valve game using Source SDK 2010, top-down 4 player co-op shoot 'em up.
Uses a bit of co-ordination. Only just did the first missions with a friend yesterday, don't know fully what I'm in for.
Saints Row 2 is literally the best COOP game ever made, and it works on PC.
