VR as a concept will never die, autists and NEETs have been asking for it since the beginning of videogames, anime and movies where the protagonist find himself in a virtual or fantasy world are more popular than ever, in the technological era we live in being connected socially only through a screen is becoming acceptable by the norm. Even if oculus and vive fail, like it's bound to happen due to the high costs and low customer pool, it won't stop the people who believe in it and desperately want it. Knowing this, is it possible to make VR something more of a gimmick with the current technology? If so, how?

people hate what they can't afford
>>
I dont like its current form at all and it doesnt support any games I want to play in a meaningful way.
>>

Enough companies are throwing their weight behind it that I think this wave of VR and HMDs is going to be the one that kicks it off. The technology might be a touch premature but it's actually in reach this time, unlike in the 90's. There are obvious issues to solve such as how to handle locomotion but creative solutions are being found.

15 pages of VR or VR supported games on Steam right now.

Affordability aside, companies outside of the games industry are supporting sales by using VR headsets for R&D, consumer research, space programmes, training, interior design, military, aerospace, medical, therapeutic and surgical education.

yes, current VR headsets (which haven't even finished shipping preorders yet) are not fantastic perfect devices and there aren't many games. Its early days yet and its expensive yeah but so were flatscreen TV's, mobile phones, etc...

with the dawn of Pascal, Polaris, DX12 and Vulkan shit's only going to get cheaper and better.

VR is here to stay.

VR will, at best, become a niche market equivalent to gaming wheels, gaming fightpads and other niche gadgets like those.

It will probably have a period where it's incredibly popular and has a few games sell really well and other people try to capitalize on it, but it won't last more than 4 years.

Truth is, the concept itself is a gimmick. It's just like when people thought the future was Minority Report's waving arms holographic bullshit until they got a Kinect and realized they just wanted to sit down and click buttons. Same deal.

I don't think it will be used for games outside of "VR arcades" and the like

It's motion controls. Takes a lot more effort to move my head than it does to press a button.

To make immersive controls, you want to eliminate as much "noise" between the player's thought and the action occurring within the virtual world. You want to minimize the amount of physical movement it takes to send a message to the game. Why would you want to emphasize a physical body you're trying to make the player forget?

I agree that adding motion to the VR experience is a dumb idea, i guess the solution for this would be SAO style, nervous system controlled VR, but i don't know if it will ever happen in our lifetime. Motion controls are stupid and ineffective compared to buttons, but it's the best we can have right now as far as immersion goes, unless we want VR to be just a screen on our heads and nothing more.

In all fairness, they're exceptionally good motion controls. Worlds apart from the Wii.
>>
>>339704929
The problem with motion controls and VR tho' is that they adapt mostly to first person games and you can't do anything too complicated with them, i could have seen it working last gen with the shooters craze but right now most of the popular games are in third person.

This difference is that kinect is shit. VR is not. People can see it for themselves and recognize the potential despite its current shortcomings and lack of killer software.
>>
>>339702610
>the concept itself is a gimmick

This is incredibly narrow minded. The potential uses for VR are far too numerous to list.
>>

The more that's involved with interfacing me into a game the less immersed I am in the game. I get what you're saying, but I couldn't imagine myself wearing those for more than an hour after I tested them. I agree with other posts, they'll be relevant in the same way flightsticks and quad-core processors are. Not at all a necessity, but nice to have if you can use it.

>Motion controls are a gimmick!
>dual-screens are a gimmick!
>pressure-sensitive buttons are a gimmick!
>haptic feedback is a gimmick!
"VR isn't a gimmick it's the real deal this time!"

Why is /v/ so stupid?

Gaming will kick off the VR industry, but it's not where it will stay. Game design as we know it just doesn't translate well enough to VR space. Apart from shooters like hover junkers and some tabletop games, VR is difficult to design for and will take some very outside the box thinking for games not to get same-y and stale.
>>
>>339699609
Giving a black person high tech gear and the first thing that happens is them holding a virtual watermelon
>>
>>339699609
I disagree. VR might die (or at least until technology improves another good amount.)

The thing is, big companies have to be onboard for VR to succeed. Big companies only care about the money, and investing in VR is a huge risk, hence why there are so few games.

Everyone is still playing it safe and watching if VR is going to catch on.

I don't think VR will be more than a gimmick. Aside from it being a whole new way to experience porn, it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal.
