Is SMT IV worth getting? I love Persona but couldn't really get into Nocturne even though I loved the battle system. My major problem with Nocturne was the constant random battles.
Also disliked that the world was so barren and lifeless with no towns and few NPCs to interact with. Wasn't really a world I could immerse myself in.

It'll kick your nuts in for the first few hours, but then it gradually becomes easier as you get more powerful, and it'll feel amazing to trample everything.
Don't expect mainline SMT to be like Persona.

>Post Apocalyptic world
>no life
Sounds reasonable to me
In SMT4 you have a bit more control over random battles in the dungeons. Also there are more "villages" the only thing you care about in them are item boxes, shops and quests NPCs

It focuses almost entirely on gameplay instead of characters, compared to Persona 3 and 4, so if you mainly liked the dungeon crawling, buffing debuffing, bonus turns and exploiting weaknesses, you will fall in love with this.
The world is more interesting than SMT nocturne, but it is stillpost apocalyptic, so don't expect lively everyday high-school fun and games.

In SMTIV you can attack enemies in the field to get advantages in battles, just like in P4.
You can also avoid battles easier like this

Sounds alright, basically I'm looking for a game with Nocturne combat, but more like a traditional JRPG.
How's the story?
GATHER DEMONS and cum again

Random encounters is a shit mechanic that I'm really glad has fallen out of favor.

You become a samurai of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, which is a middle-aged scenario.
You get a Bracelet with a spirit inside it that allows you to control demons.
The bracelet is actually a computer, and the spirit is an AI, but your Heroes have no idea what technology is
They then venture down into a dungeon where you get your shit kicked in because it is fucking difficult.
The deeper they go, the more weird stuff shows up, as the scenery changes from a dungeon to... Modern day shit.
You even find a curious weapon, which your spirit scans and says it is something called a "Handgun"
From there, spoilers spoilers spoilers angels and demons and crazy shit and oh shit oh god

It's literally the hardest boss in the game since you don't have options at that point.Actually i had more trouble with medusa arbitrarily deciding to win the fight, but still
>>339695503
Not that many more NPCs, but if you just don't like the "pulled out of the action" feeling of the random battles, SMTIV doesn't have that.
Also, in Nocturne you can watch the HUD to see when a battle's going to happen. That game got less stressful when I noticed that.
