Is it actually worth getting into the Touhou games? I haven't played many games of that style and would like to give them a try, but don't they involve jumping through hoops to get to play on an American computer?

I see people autisming out over Touhou all the time, and I like the music and cute girls, but how many people actually play the games?
>>
You are not going to enjoy the games if you're not big into shumps. Google beginner shump games.

Or just find the other fan made touhou games that aren't shumps to play. Just find something in the genre you like.
>>
Only worth it for the competitive scene. Other than that, no.

If like the shmup genre and good music then Touhou is a good choice and last time i checked you could just download the game and play it, you don't even need applocale. The best way to start is to play EoSD then move up, if you get the chance also play the old ones on PC-98
>>
Yeah, they're great fun. you can find all of the official games on moriyashrine.weebly.com
Start with 6 if you want but I played them from the beginning.
Seeing EoSD after playing MS was like an epiphany
>>
>>339689016
Actually, its the opposite
You won't enjoy it if you are big into shumps because of the gimmicks and dumbed down difficulty
>>
>>339688605
>but don't they involve jumping through hoops to get to play on an American computer?
No, not at all. They worked on my computer just fine, even before I switched my system locale to Japanese (which you should do anyway if you plan on playing a ton of Japanese indie game, there's really no downside to doing so aside from occasionally having to change the language of programs back to English.)

Anyway, start with 6, it's the most straightforward, and should give you a good idea of if you'll like the genre or not.
>>
>>339689270
But MS is better than EoSD.
>>
>>339689390

I have fun but can't clear EoSD on easy.

I'm one of those people and I think it's fun. I usually recommend people to play EoSD first to appreciate the quality of life improvements that each subsequent game brings.

The spinoffs are usually pretty solid, especially the fighting game ones (Before Hidden Masquerade) so give them a shot whenever you feel like. I'm currently playing through Puppet Dance Performance and It's tough picking a team of 6 girls cuz I like so many of them.

One thing I can say about ZUN art is that his sprites and backgrounds are actually pretty damn good, and only get better as the series goes on.

>but don't they involve jumping through hoops to get to play on an American computer?
It's dead easy, you don't have to jump through hoops.

It's babby's first bullet hell too, so you can play it if you're new to the genre
>>
>>339689740
Do the fighting games have campaigns or whatever they're called in fighting games?

I've never played a fighting game before but I'm willing to try any game at least once.
>>
>>339689740
>Before Hidden Masquerade
First off it's Hopeless Masquerade you dumb fucking dork poster.
Second I had more fun with ULiL than I did with any of the other fighting games.
And my main felt more fun to play as in SWR than in Soku. Must be some sort of mechanical difference because she wasn't really nerfed outside of a few minor things.

Dumb fucking secondary Youmufags I swear.
>>
Which game is Mamizou in? I like her for some reason.
>>
>>339689992

She's the extra boss of Ten Desires.
>>
>>339689871
All the fightin games have some sort of story mode, the only one who got the short stick is the Hisoutensoku expansion but even in that case you still get three stories. Hisoutensoku was more about gameplay balance and whatnot anyway

Yes, they do. And they're pretty damn good.
Just don't play them until after you've played the mainline games, it'll make you appreciate the characters more.

>>339689992
She's a boss in Ten Desires (A subpar shmup, but it's fine, and her fight itself is GOAT), a playable character in Hopeless Masquerade (Arguably the worst game in the series) and a playable character in Urban Legend in Limbo (Like HM but actually well made and fun if you're open minded and can accept non-traditional fighters.)
>>
>>339690115
>the only one who got the short stick is the Hisoutensoku expansion but even in that case you still get three stories
>Dumb fuckers who don't realize how fantastic the Soku story is.
Fuck the Soku "balance", game is nowhere near as balanced as you fuckers claim it is.
However, the Soku stories are all fantastic, and unlike the other fighting games never really feel samey. Plus Sanae gets a legit character arc, which is great.
>>
>>339690220
>accept non-traditional fighters
Shit man, I don't even know what a traditional fighter is like.
>>
>>339690220
I really want to fight Mamizou but I can't bring myself to 1cc Ten Desires at all, it's probably my least favorite game of the series. I just find it so utterly boring. Coming down from how utterly perfect UFO was to this shitfest was one of the biggest disappointments of my life.
>>
>>339689871
Yeah they have an Arcade mode.

>I'm willing to try any game at least once
It's been a long time since I've encountered someone with your attitude. I hope you have fun.
>>
>>339690365
Soku story was cute but you only get three characters and what Soku does more is the balance, i would have liked a more fleshed story mode like in SWR but i guess the giant mecha plot wasn't good enough for the entire cast again
>>
>>339690446

You're on the ground.

>Coming down from how utterly perfect UFO was to this shitfest was one of the biggest disappointments of my life.
UFO was fucking garbage though.
Like fuck, worst cast, worst ost, worst mechanics, subpar shot types.
Ok it wasn't that bad, but honestly I would say that UFO and TD are on the same level. Except TD has a way better Extra.
>>
Does the writing get better in later games or is a lot just lost in translation?

Some of the shit in EoSD is downright nonsensical, haven't played any other yet.

Ok, see, that's your issue.
You're primitive and ignorant mind is mistaking volume for quality.
SWR had a shit ton of stories.
SWR also had a ton of redundancy. You could cut out a good 50% of the story and you wouldn't lose anything of value.

Soku, on the other hand, is more focused, resulting in tighter stories that feel more meaningful than, say, Patchouli's story in SWR.
Plus, each character got a unique final boss, with unique cards and mechanics. That was hype as fuck.

I mean, don't get me wrong, Tenshi's final card is still one of my favorite moments in the entire series, but it gets old after the 5th time you see it, you know?

UFO was really good. Starting with the Ichirunzan fight, all the songs were good. All the bosses and stages were great, just right in terms of difficulty, and very creative. I really liked the UFO gimmick once I got good at it as well. After songs like "Interdimensional Voyage of a Ghostly Passenger Ship" and "Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind" everything that came out in TD was just a disappointment for how generic and soulless it felt.

Not to mention that UFO is one of the only games with an actually emotional and poignant story if you read into it. And while I admit Nue was kinda boring, "UFO Romance in the Night Sky" is the best extra stage song in the entire series.
>>
>>339690887
First: calm your tits primitive
Second: Its a fightin game story, it will always be subpar, you just take it and have fun so by this logic its better to have more characters doing stuff than less and "better", i mean if we want to be serious then yeah every story had a special final battle but the only one that had any reason to exist was Sanae because Meiling and Cirno where more comical than anything and that is a bit of a waste don't you think?
>>
I loved playing touhou, loved all comics made about it and spent hours reading shit about stuff.
Now it feels like I know nothing about anything since I stopped playing snd reading one year ago. So much has happened and too many new characters for me to start liking them again over pearls like Moko or Shikeiki. Shit.
>>
>>339690810
Sorry, anon. I just get mad sometimes for no real reason, don't take it personally.
Have a cute zombie.

>>339690962
I disagree. I found the stage themes to be forgetable, aside from the stage 6 theme which was kind of simple despite sounding nice. The bosses were alright, but the difficulty felt kind of fucked up. Stage 4 is a cake walk for some reason, and then Stage 5 will fuck you up with bullets that are the same color as the background (thanks ZUN.)
>everything that came out in TD was just a disappointment for how generic and soulless it felt.
I think the Stage 3 and Boss 3 music are fantastic, and everything after that ranges from alright to amazing.

>Not to mention that UFO is one of the only games with an actually emotional and poignant story if you read into it.
Nah, that's probably the most overrated aspect of the game. On the surface it's a story about a saint who's followers free her, because she appeals for human and youkai equality. But under that you start to discover a different tale, one of a human who was so afraid of death, that she was willing to compromise her humanity, allow humans to perish, take up dark magic, and take up a hypocritical stance, just for the sake of not dying.

>UFO Romance in the Night Sky" is the best extra stage song in the entire series.
I agree completely if you ignore Alice in Wonderland, which is actually the best.

And that's exactly why it's so good. You actually have to read into it, as opposed to "Remilia just wanted to take a walk outside during daylight hours." or "Utsuho stole the sun."

I guess it depends on how I'm feeling. I listen to a lot of Love-Colored Master Spark and Oriental Dark Flight, but there's just something so emotional about Magician's Melancholy, I just can't help but make it my favorite Marisa theme. It always felt like it represented a side of Marisa that we, the audience, don't really get to see often. A more introspective side of her character.
If that doesn't count as a Marisa theme, then The Witches' Ball ~ Magus is my choice, it's a very cute, witchy sounding song.

I don't know,it has its ups and downs.
I fell in love with this series and it taught me various things about gaming as a whole (e.g. never drop a challenge,be patient etc).
The downside is that you will have almost no one to talk to about it when you make considerable progress, besides this hellhole that is /v/ and /jp/ to some extent.

But even with that,I don't regret getting into 2hu,as it helped me discover I had a hard on for beautiful patterns and seemingly impossible stuff to dodge.
