Pretty much any modern, effective DRM needs to be online at some point, it's just a matter of when. Unless I'm not thinking of something.
If it doesn't ever need to connect to the internet, like the old CD key way, I don't really mind. Even that, though, is a bit of a problem since it can make long-term archiving of games a problem, though it really doesn't since it's always gotten cracked.

Password in the manual was great when it was incorporated as part of the game. The Island of Dr Brain used it as one of their learning puzzles that taught you some basic map skills and learning latitude and longitude.
Once I pay for a game, I should be able to do whatever I want with all the data in it, barring online interactivity.
