Why doesn't anyone play RTS anymore?
It used to be extremely popular in the 2000s
>>339679554
A great surge of migrant casuals came in and fucked everything up.
Have you not been paying attention for the last 10 years?
MOBAs killed the genre
WoW and EVE rekt everything.
Probably takes too long to get good at them. Missed the days playing red alert, SC, and aoe2 with shitty dial up. All these de syncs when we all live in the same city lil. Quake was fun too.
>>339681389
People still play AoE 2
they used to make a lot of really samey rts games. most of them used to just be shitty medieval castle simulators that played exactly the same. the amount of actual good rts games isnt that much. then companies came out with shitty ones that practically killed the franchises, mobas became a bigger thing (there was one rts that turned itself into a moba and flopped)
rts games that have came out recently have, for the most part, flopped as well, like PA and grey goo, not to mention aoe 2 hd being laggy as shit and the aom expansion being trash. honestly if ensemble didnt bite the dust and c&c didnt get fucked, it would be a lot more alive. or at least, not as stillborn as it is now. the only rts game to possibly look forward to is dawn of war 3 and even that is hitting some red flags and might hit a lot more come e3 when gameplay is out.

whats your fucking problem idiot
>>339680964
this
>>339679554
They don't make money so big companies don't make them. Starcraft II and Company of Heroes 2 are both legacies and one's a prestige title and the other relies on micro-transactions.
As for why indie makers haven't made any - they have, but they're all reiterations and boring. Offworld Trading Company was interesting, but it's not revolutionary like Homeworld, Total Annihilation, or Company of Heroes were.
>>339681954
like i keep saying, /pol bullied /v/ so hard that now some anon's are broken.
Just like how USA nuked japan so hard they lost their sun ray's and now they are a kawaii red dot sun.
>>339681859
I'm kind of hoping Halo Wars 2 will do good for the exact reason you posted, that there is really nothing out there right now
Halo Wars 2 will be on PC, but hopefully the devs wont baby it down to console level since there will be a separate console port.
>>339679554
When it comes to the RTS genre, where should I start?
AoE II?
>>339682103
oh yea, I keep forgetting about halo wars 2. that makes 2 rts games to possibly look forward to, but remain cautious of.
>>339682126
depends on what setting you like, really. for medieval aoe 2 is great.
>>339682232
Halo Wars 2 will be playable at E3 this year and will come out probably towards 4th quarter.

because RTS actually require skills. And for example /v/ is full of casuals.
>>339683257
So do FPS and MOBA's, believe it or not.
Even WoW arenas take some skill.
Skill isn't always apples to apples, obviously the skillset required in different genres varies. You'd think that was common sense.
>>339683527
sheit
Cause theyre for nerds.
>>339683257
no, it's because RTS are extremely dated and have not grown in any way since 1999.
>>339683869
>casuals have ruined what used to be an entire culture for self proclaimed 'nerds'
Why do the normalfags have to ruin everything?
>>339681578
Wow that's a lot of people. Bought it on release but didn't fire it up yet. I hope to play through the campaign after I finish my dow2 playthrough. It was pretty challenging in my early teens.
>>339683987
What the fuck needs to change?
I played the shit out of Age of Empire II and the expansion. Shit was going great for many years til Mexicans and Turks began to join up. Not even being racist, but they just aren't that great of players, and the good people started to depart.
>>339684164
It was great until the fucking retarded WE WUZ KINGS N SHIT meme killed any serious discussion of it
>>339679554
just bought starcraft 2just for the campaign and the map editorafter years of teasing, looks pretty good.
i'm happy i bought that instead of overwatch

I was mem+ on Zone, then a mod on everything up to Voobly (where the best players currently are, none play on steam). I love this game. So there are a lot of people that still take it seriously.

I heard SC2 is pretty dead except for Koreans
Alberto Barbosa will reclaim his throne and expand the moorish caliphate, for the glory of Portugal
>>339686787
Do you think Cossacks 3 will flop?
>>339681000
ARE THE CRYSTAL GEMS
Part of what killed it is they stopped releasing fun games. AoE III sucked ass compared to how fun II was. Rise of Nations was fucking amazing, then they came out with a steaming pile afterwards.

So what are RTS "fundamentals" /v/? In fighting games, fundamentals are skills that transfer from one game to another one, such as spacing, punishing, and damage conversion. What are the most fundamental skills in RTS games?

I think RTS games are pretty varied, so it's hard to find something that transfers between all games.
That being said, the most important thing in most of them is probably understanding the economy behind them, but then again there is WC3 for example that focuses mostly on micro with little economic aspect.

I loved playing as the Byzantines. Build a ton of walls, take over enemy, build more walls, take over another enemy, etc.
When's AoE4 though
>>339690227
Foresight. Keep track of what your enemy is up to and gather information, before making a move.
Resource management/acquisition is important as well. The economy is your lifeline, if you screw it up or the enemy manages to meddle with it, you're in for a hard time.

micro and makro skills, multitasking
basically being eveywhere at the same time while being extremely fast and precise doing it
I was an aoe2 pro and made some money on the side on austrian and german tournaments about 15 years ago. when you play this professionally, you basically learn that, as noob, comfort is death. you can't just start the game and hope to get better by playing a lot - this only works for a few special talents. I actually needed to constantly read up on strategies and really learn them through playing them over and over again. and even after I had my own folder and could tell you every build order, I still was in the 1700 skill level.
what really upped my game was stress. after I started to stress myself to get better and had a few friends to train with, I finally reached the flow feeling - when suddenly stress stops being a big, clunky rock, and turns into a stream, carrying you along the way. once you are on that level, RTS games become like shooters. just takes a few years of training for most.

Starcraft2 is reaching having 20-30k players daily on peak hours.
These numbers are very similiar numbers to what EVE: Online has and that game is alive for over a decade.
Also these numbers would earn you top 10 steam charts.
So no. RTS is very much alive you are just deluded.
>>339698429
Do you have any numbers based on region? I'd be interested in knowing how many of those are NA/EU, and how many are korean or others

this is a joke, right? niggers are all a big, elaborate joke?
>>339698665
They only show a global player count. I would make an educated guess and say that most people are EU/NA, simply because the player count peaks at their primetime.
