Nintendo's "Free to Start" games are usually pretty good. Layton Bros. is a F2S too and is fun.
I'd rather a game be free to start and not have shitty microtransactions and freemium shit than F2P and have all of those.

Been playing for three years, enjoy it quite a bit, constantly updated, nothing locked behind a paywall save cosmetics, and if you do buy premium currency it lasts.
There are quite a few but it sounds like you've already made up your mind.
MHO is probably one of the best f2p experiences I've gotten, but it'll probably never get localized.

There's in depth guides on how to get it all setup, it's not too hard to follow really. The worst of it is uninstalling the bloatware you accidentally accept to install when going through the installation in chinese.

The limited hunts were put in place to stop chinese savants from killing themselves playing the game. It's not all bad, you get 10 hunt passes daily, and can hold 30 passes at any given time, along with a reserve that lets you pull in some extra. Weekly pass giveaways as well. I'd imagine that you'd only really run out of passes if you were spamming 2 minute long quests in rapid succession.
