no, but are they e-?
>>
>>339616728
what does the e even stand fo? Electronic?
>>
>>339616537

They're non-physically intensive sports like chess. Although I never understood the fascination with esports. I can download a game and play it in my underwear in the comfort of my home with a few clicks. If I want to play full contact American football, I need to find at least 43 other players, all the gear, 7 refs, a 100 yard field, and schedule it so that everyone can make it.
>>
>>339616537
No. They dont require any physical skill. Its a shitty term for it but its fine. I just call them Competitive Gamers. They still have to practice like 80 hours a week
>>
>>339616537
if they were they wouldn't be called E-sports, they'd be just sports
>>

nope, and they never will be

sports are physical activity

>"BUT MUH FAST THINKING AND QUICK REFLEXES"

Chess and speed chess aren't sports either, they're games. People make shitloads of money playing and watching competitive poker, and that's not a sport, it's a game.

Sports are sports and games are games, grow the fuck up and stop trying to redefine words that work perfectly well.

I don't care if you like this stuff, but keep it out of my real sports. They don't send out an update about the chess competition over the PA during half-time of a football game.
>>

They aren't sports but they are competitions that take their own set of skills. Sports are physical and the participants are athletes. "Esports" participants are not athletes.

Just answer this little question - how could a bunch of guys, sitting in front of their monitors and pressing few keys like maniacs be considered "sportsmen"?

All "competitive" games are about reaction time (a very tiny aspect of real sport) and repeating same schematics over and over. Even "competitive" RTS games like Starcraft are not about thinking, they are about fast clicking and utilizing few "meta" build orders. The only difference comes when bunch of guys launch "unranked" game (like "map of the week") and play purely for fun - in "ranked" they all repeat same "meta", because nobody dares to question the tested outcomes.

This is also the reason why "competitive" games are poison killing fun and good gameplay.

I think some things are missing here. What is skill? I think a good definition here would it is simply the ability to do something well. More skill = more things you need to do well to accomplish something / need to do something much better than another thing comparatively.

Lets take football for example. It doesn't take much skill to move a ball down the field. You move forward and keep the ball infront of you, kicking it forward so you can kick it again when you reach it. Add in some players and rules and then things change quite a bit dont they? You still have the first skills you learned earlier about moving a ball down the field but what about evading and being able to move the ball without it being stolen? Those are skills too, those take quite a lot of time and effort to learn.

But what about e-sports, let alone games in general? Well at the basics you have to learn how to properly input key commands and move a mouse around properly (kicking a ball down the field and running after it). You could look at the rules of soccer and compare them to (just as an example) league of legends. Add in a few rules and you're basically good to go.
What I don't get is why do people feel the need to say one is better than the other. Like did the board become full of salty mexicans and sandniggers since summer began? Is it people being bitter that theyre worse at SC2 than they are soccer? wheres this all coming from?

I have no problem with people playing games professionally, but I feel a name like competitive gaming would be more suitable. Playing a video game isn't a sport, even if it is professionally . I'm glad they at least differentiate them by adding the "e"

Considering they're both essentially gigantic commercials (Real sports being gigantic ads for whomever wants to pay up and have their product plastered all over the stadium/commercials and whatnot), and E-sports being the actual product being sold, I'd say they're in the same boat, sure.

Both serve no real purpose other than to incite competitiveness within the 10-26 demographic, which for a lot of kids ends with a lot of kids developing up to high amounts of narcissism because of it.

E-sports are pretty fucking terrible, but so are real sports for pretty much the same reasons, it's just that E-sports are so much more accessible because you don't need to be athletically inclined, that it reaches more kids as a result.

Competitive gaming is literally what is. It describes it perfectly.
>>
>>339619671
The taboo is coming from video games not being physical competitions, thus not fitting the established definition of what a sport is. The definition of a word doesn't have to change just because one group decides they want to try using a word differently, it has to catch on with everyone else, and shit maybe it will over time.
>>
Reminder to not talk about competetive vidya on /v/. America has got 50% of the maket, having by far unbeaten highest interest in video games per capita, but they have consistly the worst esports teams across every single relevant game. Alright you niggers calm down. No, e-sports are not sports, they are e-sports. They are called e-sports for this very reason. They are a competitive platform done over an electronic medium and are called e-sports in order to make an important distinction between them and sports. Sports and e-sports are incomparable except for basic concepts like strategy and skill, and thus are two entirely different things. Anyone who dismisses one or the other simply because one is not like the other is retarded, as are people who claim one is objectively better than the other. Both have their place, yet both are different from each other and shouldn't really be compared.

>>339621749

>>339620181
I get your point about language being fluid, but just because definitions sometimes change doesn't mean people have to accept them happening. As it stands, Esports don't fit into the traditional idea of what a sport is, involving physicality and all that. So you ask most people today, and they'll say video games aren't a sport. Maybe in the future that will change, but as of right now most people stand by the "old" definition.
>>
>>339622190
Try becoming more than a fanboy/consumer at gaming, then we talk.
>>
>>339621162
So why not call them what they are, competitive gaming?
>>
>>339622273
>he thinks e-sports require effort
really?
>>
>>339622342
Dominating and being skilled at a game takes effort, anyone who has played a videogame at some decent competitive level knows this.
>>
I don't know if someone pointed this out in the thread, but the reason people insist on "e-Sports" being compared with real sports is that if you can brand them as equals, then 1) skinny nerds who don't have any athletic skills can claim they're "athletes", and 2) marketers can elevate their crappy game to the status of "sports".

Basically, virgins are trying to elevate videogames to the status of sports so that they can attack sports for being inferior. In other news, videogame players are insecure manchildren.
>>
>>339622796
Anyone can manage that if they cared enough to.
>>
>>339622323

Less of a ring to it, even though I like that better.

It really should be Competitive Gaming though, maybe it would change some of the cancerous attitudes in Esports.
>>
>>339623082
Except for people who are already invested in the scene, the term "e-sports" is met with a sneer and a laugh. "Competitive gaming" is something people immediately understand, both in terms of what the words themselves mean (versus "e-sports", which could easily include electronic chess or poker matches) and because plenty of people know friends who are hardcore into video games and it's hardly surprising that there would be people who would compete for money.

Putting it on the same level as sports is what makes the average person find it absurd.
>>
>>339623032
Typical noob excuse, playing a lot doesn't make the skilled player. It's having the capacity to outsmart your oponent and knowing how to take advantage of the game mechanics and enviroment, just putting effort is not enough, your opponent can have advantage simply for having better control of his own mind and being smarter.

"Competitive" gaming implies that only a percentage of people are actually competing, when everyone (by definition) competes at games.

Professional gaming is good enough for most instances.
>>
>>339624000
Literally anyone can accomplish that shit
>>
There are games that demand good hand coordination and precision to pull some of their advanced skills, you need to develop muscle memory for good aiming as well, videogames are not just about mental effort, with poor motion skills you will not become a professional player.
