A series like FF is hard to represent because almost every game has a completely different cast. It's kind of a similar issue with Pokemon where there are 700+ creature you could battle with, and everybody's experience is going to be different, so it's hard to single out a character that everybody who's played the series has a connection with (unlike a series like Mario, where everybody has a connection with Mario because he's the star of 99% of them). So instead you have to pick out characters that are way more popular than others, like Pikachu or Lucario, despite the fact that there are going to a large amount of players who disagree and resent the choice. The fact of the matter is, Cloud is the de facto poster boy of Final Fantasy. His game is the best selling, arguably the best received all around, and I believe has the most media spin-offs. Plus he has made a shitton of guest appearances (maybe the most out of any other FF character). While someone like Cecil or a Warrior of Light might have been more appropriate from a Nintendo standpoint, I think the Smash Team and, judging by the votes, the majority of the public wanted someone who represents the whole franchise as a whole, and that man is Cloud.

You do realize that making Smash Bros. games is a huge endeavor, right? Companies like HAL Labs and especially Playtonic (which was just put together very very recently and has like 20 people on it) are just too small to handle the manpower of producing a Smash game.
