A "half A press" is not a half at all, when you press the A button that IS the A press. When you release the A button is irrelevant to the initial press as it's a seperate key event. This means that 0 A pressers have been getting it wrong for years as they always underestimate the true amount of A presses.
The .5 A press is a purely semantic term for delineating when the button must be pressed to enter a course through a painting but is otherwise unused within the stage.

Nobody claims that its a "true" half press. For a run of the stage itself, it counts as a full press, that it's semantics means that during a full 120-star run, you would not add up the number of presses for each seperate stage, but instead you could save one A press during the full run for every press that's arbitrarily called a "half" press.

They're counting jumps, which happens when the button is pressed, regardless of how long it takes to release it. So if they can hold it without needing to jump again, that saves a jump and thus an A press.
