What was the first game to make normies and game journos flip out about muh story? Bioshock? Mass Effect? I remember a long time ago having to defend companies like Obsidian by saying their stories make up for their gameplay, but now days the story taking precedent over gameplay is normal and it's become awful.

quake spawned a few fan made add ons for its time, like fantasy quake, quake chess and quake rally. this has nothing to do with the story but quake was cool all around. very cool. tuff.
