Depends on the desert in question, ranging from entering a casino and ordering a drink in Mojave desert to following Elephants that I might see in Southern Sahara, or just concluding "you don't" and kicking the bucket.

For starters, the continents have moved, rain pattern have changed and deserts haven't always been dry and in some cases there can still be vast quantities of water trapped underground from times before the area became desert. Secondly, deserts are by definition arid, but not waterless, and there might be rivers or waterholes there, or the life on the desert might have adapted to extract any moisture available (like morning dew).
