Agreed, the Mako sidequests of ME1 are "that part" that destroy any will to replay whenever I feel like playing again. Not because the Mako was bad, the thing was great. But because every planet was samey empty garbage with only some retextures to differentiate.

Also, the Rachni mission that sucked shit.

Not to mention the entire inventory system UI was so bad the complete removal of inventory for ME2 was an improvement.

I don't get the whole Paragon/Renegade path thing. Isn't choosing one sole set of responses really dull, restricting and predetermined? Where's the fun in that? Granted I've only done one playthrough and just chose whichever options I thought were best, so I haven't tried it myself

>>339571438
The correct way to play is a mixture of both. Why the fuck would anyone limit themselves to only one kind of answer? Where's the roleplay in picking blue always no matter what?

And before you uninformed idiots say it, as a matter of fact you CAN play down the middle and still have enough points to pick either option in almost every important decision of ME1 AND ME2. In ME1 if you take the speech upgrades, and in ME2 if you import your high paragon / high renegade save. Far more choices than you'd have available by sticking to one path.
>>
>>339572498

They subverted that really well with the paragon and renegade action QTEs in ME2 and 3. I know, "well" and "QTE" in the same sentence.

choosing a renegade option in a paragon run didn't feel like a penalty, more like a "fuck this shit i'm out" moment.

I thought Mass Effect was the shit at the time, and I'd probably still enjoy it if it were to come out today, but in retrospect it seems like it just highlights how immature "choice" usually is in games right now.

Everything's so built around creating a MAXIMUM FUN experience that moral choices don't have any stakes. You know you're the big badass and should be able to fix any and everything, or at least do some save scumming to get what you want. The moral high ground is something you just choose and get, rather than something you earn and gamble on. Sticking your neck out is always going to be worth it, no matter how big the risk allegedly is (allowing the rachni to continue living, for example- damn near suicidal idealism with no repercussions). There is literally no such thing as a choice that actually backfires in Mass Effect, except for when you're a dick, which tends to be the exact of opposite of reality.

The Ashley/Kaiden choice is probably the only one in the series that's all that good. Fucking shame the rest couldn't live up to that.

>>
>>339575260
I loved that choice, only because it was an actual grey choice. There is no good or bad way of doing it, you just need to pick. I hate looking at the concept art at what could've been, like Renegade Shepard resorting to reaper tech and becoming indoctrinated, or how the reapers had a semi-decent reason to harvest people due to dark energy being produced from biotics instead of "LOL ALWAYS WAR"
