This is objectively false. Banjo Kazooie is debatable, but SM64 is miles beyond DK64, Conker, Sunshine, 3D Land, every Sonic, etc and that's without counting the obvious crap like Croc.

That's not better at all. It had worse controls (dpad and tgumbstrap were both awful), worse sound, pointless new power-ups, and forced you to play as Yoshi at the beginning. All it had was a few extra stars and some minigames that would later be rehashed in NSMB anyway.

Why did games peak in that era? Gave birth to so many goats but these days there's just not the same level of awesome. I don't know. I think it's because it's so huge now, it's more about money and making big ass releases that appeal to as many people as possible.

Enjoying is one thing but having the same level of quality and direction is another. I still enjoy games very much don't get me wrong but there are so many games that haven't been topped or their series went downhill.

Zelda games barely have any gameplay these days. The overworlds are glorified hubworlds little opportunity for exploration, the combat is piss easy, the bosses typically have a simple gimmick that you exploit 3-4 times to win, and the "puzzles" that have become the focus of the games are rarely more involved than killing an enemy to get a key, using the dungeon item on the dungeon gimmick, or just pushing blocks around.

A combination of budgets being low enough and 3D being new enough that it was practical and encouraged for the AAA developers of the time to be creative with how their games played. Now that budgets are massive and consumers have largely settled on what they want to see in 3D games, it makes more sense for AAA companies to just iterate on the same ideas that have been proven to sell over the past 20 years.

Banjo Kazooie has a fundamentally different design practice than SM64 does. In Super Mario 64, making Mario's movement capabilities kinetic and speedy was the primary goal, and aspects regarding level design and many other choices followed suit. Banjo Kazooie has platforming, but places value in exploring the levels as if they were fleshed out locations and not just abstract platforming challenges. People are allowed to have preference to one style over the other, but it's easy to appreciate SM64 more when not many 3D platformers since its release followed the same momentum based design philosophy.
