At 7pm Pacific/10pm Eastern, AMD will be streaming their Computex press conference where they are expected to reveal their next-generation 14nm Polaris GPU. Not a competitor to Nvidia's high-end GTX 1080 (that will be Vega, expected late this year or early next year) Polaris is instead expected to make a run for the price/performance and efficiency crowns in the midrange segment of the discrete GPU market, as well as giving a big boost to AMD in the efficiency-conscious mobile GPU market.

You can catch the webcast here.

This will be my next card probably since I have a 1080 screen. The 200 bucks price seems great.

I dont think we are yet into the 4k generation. Most new games cant be played at 60 fps on 4k even with top of the line nvidia cards. I think we are still 2 years away from real 4k performance.

I wish the card to be better than nvidia so some real innovation and competitive pricing happens rather than both companies being complacent and just rebranding for another 5 generations.

No, this is

We know most people have 1080p screens, so why would we make an expensive half assed 4k card for the screen you probably dont have instead of an affordable 1080p card that you might actually want to buy?

At the end of the day their goal is to make money. Its like a ferrari and a shitty car to take your kids to school. The ferrari is always out there for the people who wanna buy it, but most of the people will buy the car who fits their needs at a reasonable price.

For another few months, then we'll finally find out if AMD has saved the PC platform as we know it, or if it will fade into obscurity driven into the ground by a trifecta of monopolies driving prices up while the vast majority of users switch to cheaper products that are good enough for their solitaire and facebook.
>>
>>339552484
I'm sure for every AMD-biased game there's 5 Nvidia ones, they're kind of known for that shit.
>>
>>339552450
This will be between a 390 and 390X in performance, and the 390 already beats out the 970 in most applications. So it'll likely be a much better a cheaper card for more performance.
>>
>>339552000
Nvidia went for bottom-up approach with the 750ti, which was a Maxwell card before the 900 series launched. The sub-$300 GPU market is bigger than the enthusiast segment, it'll make them more money. It might not be great to let the 1080 run uncontested like that for several months, but they are still working on Vega (probably waiting on more HBM2 availability)

You contradict yourself. No one defends bias, and Nvidia is known to step into places where their cards are shown as worse than AMD's, especially in AotS. Nvidia also cheats on benchmarks, comparing non-reference nvidia cards and reference AMD cards. They're notorious for not being fair in competing. Shitting on AMD is fair, but don't you fucking defend nvidia.
>>
>>339550987
Here is some bad news. For you to notice 4K you would probably need a screen around 27 to 32". Never mind the fact that you have to sit really close to notice the difference which is where the bad part comes in, you can't see the entire screen which is crucial for multiplayer games where you need to constantly see the action in the entire screen.
>>
>>339552952
Wait for the 490 since its better to have one card and the fury isn't the best card they've ever made.
>>

They weren't able to run faster than that because CF is shit. Scaling between cards always sucks.
But if they could show off the 480X going toe to toe with the 1080 single vs single, they'd do it. So I'm quite sure the 1080 beats the crap out of it in single vs. single.

Only half the hardware was fully utilized. Its probably not fully using all of the shaders and tmus. Most games are designed for low end GPUs and really take advantage of all the hardware. This is why some games perform so much better on AMD GPUs

For core count, you have the same shit as with SLI/CF: Dimishing returns. For games, the sweet spot is still four cores.

huh, now I'm conflicted.

Well that was underwhelming. The GPUs will be cheap, yes, but there's basically no gaming infrastructure with shit like Ansel and SMT and shit.

I obviously wouldn't buy it without benchmarks, as I'm not getting a reference card. That's stupid.

Obviously the 1070 is more future proof, but coming off a 7870 either would be a huge boost, and that's a biiiiig price difference.
>>
>>339554592
>I spend $200 ish and get essentially a slightly boosted gtx 970 with the new amd card

Considering that the 970 is a great card and should still be viable for another 2 years or so, I'd totally go for the 480.

Also, let's be honest here, anyone who buys a 1070 to play at 1080p is a fucking idiot.

>>
>>339555116

>>
>>339555410
It's also interesting that they are pushing the 2 cards at $500 ish vs the 1080 on a loaded game when the 1070 isn't far behind the 1080 and costs less than $400.

Kinda defeats their whole "Just buy two of our cards" approach.
>>
Did they seriously run a side by side comparison where where the 1080 clearly had everything on a much higher setting then claim theirs is better because of a few fps higher? Anyone could have noticed that difference, the amd side had like no shadows and shit terrain.
>>
So this card rivals 1070 with half the cost? What's the catch here AMD?
>>
>>339554935
>in a game optimized for AMD hardware
Async compute isn't an AMD limited technology, NVIDIA could use it to their full advantage too but for some stupid fucking reason they still stuck with using emulated Async Compute on their newer cards which still results in subpar DX12 performance.

That it's not close to the 1070 in terms of performance.

That's the catch. It's more like an in between for the 970 and 980, closer to the 980, while the 1070 actually is well past a 980.
>>
>>339555821
Nah, the 1070 is slightly above a 980ti while this card is slightly above a 970 so the price difference seems about right
>>
>>339555705
Two 1070s would be almost twice as much as two 480s.
>>
Any reason to not get this card if I want to do 1080p gaming and future 1440p?
>>
>>339555551

Because it's the only big "next big thing" available to push for multiple industries in the computer and software worlds.

It will eventually be a thing once more affordable and only because of the massive investments that are being hedged for it to succeed.
>>
>>339555924
It's been a great fucking card.

In DX12 mode. That part is pretty important, seeing how that's not really arrived with most devs just yet.

The point is that ONE 1070 is probably a better value than buying two other cards for about $500.

When they are trying to push 1080p performance in a frugal mindset.

The 480 is in between a GTX 970 and 980 and only rival a 1070 when in DX 12 mode. AMD is pushing good drivers lately, so the 480 might surpass the 980 (and it's about half it's price, too) The catch is if you buy the AMD card, babbah will come to your house and fuck you in the ass with his aids laden dick.
>>
Guys GUYS; GAIZ!

The speculated CU count for the PS4K/XB2 is around 32-36CUs with an expected performance of 4.14TFLOPs - 6TFLOPs.

So the R9 480X is likely going to be in the new consoles. This launch therefore is even better news. This means any games made on those consoles and ported over to PC, assuming the port isn't a massive trainwreck, will perform very well on the R9 480X. In CrossFire it will guarantee 1080p60 maxed out.
>>
>>339553784
I have gtx560 and I would gladly buy a cheap 960.
>>
>>339556245

tera - floating point operations per second.

i.e. calculations per second, raw computing power.
>>
>>339556608
Weren't the using GHz or something to measure speed?
>>
I was going to buy 1070 straight when it came out to sale but now I'm unsure and might wait to see how 480x looks like.
>>
>>339556461
Even if the rumors are true the consoles will be built on SOC chips, not discrete graphics cards and they won't share the clock speed, the dedicated memory, or the thermal overhead.
>>
>>339556506

Tera Floating Point Operations Per Second.

5TFLOPs = 5 Trillion Floating Point Operations Per Second.

GPUs can do vector math much more easily than CPUs can, due to having a vast amount of shaders and significantly greater memory bandwidth than the CPU.

For every second, the GPU can do 5 trillion vector calculations. If you had a near 100% scaling in CrossFire, 2xR9 480Xs would be able to do 10 Trillion vector calculations per second; easily btfo'ing any console port ever; and so on.
>>
>>339556346

Not really vulkin has that potential to be the next best thing.
