Pay per month, when other genres were generally 1 time purchases
>>
World of Warcraft

Turned the genre from player-driven online worlds into theme parks with loot slot machines and got so popular that almost every single one after it failed, with a handful of exceptions.

Without WoW, mmorpg's would have died a long time ago. LOL

You faggots went in the direction of Everquest/World of Warcraft rather than Ultima Online/Star Wars Galaxies/EVE Online
>>
>>339548624
Bullshit

There was vibrancy before WoW, Everquest vs Asheron vs Ultima vs Anarchy vs Galaxies with no true behemoth larger than everything else combined
>>
>>339547472
>clicking is boring, there's no challanges
>no creativity anymore
>reliance on "tried-and-true" methods make every one look the same
>too much focus on multiplayer and not enough on the narrative
>no long term support save for dungeons and raids

Way to out yourself as underage

MMOs were alive and well before WoW. Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, Star Wars Galaxies, Camelot Online, Everquest, Anarchy Online, FF12, the list goes on.

Since WoW, the only MMO that kept the spirit of the old ones was EVE. Every other one has attempted to suckle the casual teat of WoW.
>>
>>339548624
no they wouldn't before wow everquest and lineage 2 and ultima were doing fine, sure it wasn't 10million but at wich point do we draw the line of "alive"?
>>
>What went wrong?

Pee-noise. They are fucking everywhere. No MMORPG are safe from them.
>>
Does anyone feel fast travel kind of ruined the genre? I like that BDO doesn't have it. Sure people are impatient fucks but at least you can enjoy the world more and it makes the world feel much bigger than if it was fast travel
>>
>>339548959
>>339547997

Older MMO's (WoW, Lineage 2, Everquest, DAoC,etc) were mostly P2P and were more popular back then. F2P mmorpg's are generally lower quality korean L2/WoW clones
>>
You used an apostrophe to pluralize, that's what.
>>
WoW

The genre steered toward solo play instead of group play. They had to make them easier and more simplified for casuals.

They know that at the end of the day people don't actually want to play with others, but they DO want to shown off their stuff to others.

That's why WoW made it so easy to achieve anything in the game right there on a silver platter

Too bad. We had some great games before WoW
>>
>>339549226
all QoL features contribute to the feeling of ghost town
>dungeon/raid finder
>fast travel
>flying mounts
they're not bad features by themselves but together they anihilate any sense of community
>>
>>339549226
That's definitely a factor in shrinking a world and killing immersion.
>>
>>339549732

NOTHING should be automated or "streamlined" in an MMORPG.

All that inconvenient shit you hate, the chat spam, the haggling, the constant sense that you're herding cats trying to get a group of assholes in the same place at the same time?

That's the POINT of a fucking MMORPG.

Why the fuck are you playing a multiplayer game that adds """""""""""""features""""""""""""""" that allow you to interact with the other players as little as possible?

Nobody seems to understand this, least of all Blizzard. If you want to give your MMORPG every time saving convenience in the world, the most time-saving and convenient thing your players could do is not fucking play it at all.
>>
Friendly reminder that if you play FFXIV because you're a no-life MMO junkie and not because you like final fantasy, then you are a idort and should an hero.
>>
Known what's sad?

People stopped saying "ding."

Even though I never really cared for it, it just shows how MMOs' sense of progression had shifted.

It's not about leveling anymore, it's about grinding gear. It's not about farming for utility items, it's about upgrading your gear.

Everything in vertical progression. There's no horizontal progression.

I just miss old FFXI
>>
>>339549916
basically yeah, so much for MASSIVELY MULTIPLAYER when it feels like a sigleplayer game with lobby matchmaking
>>
>>339547472
wow clones and mobas
both things are fucking awful
>>
>>339548624
But there were many mmos doing well. I played FFXI before WoW and loved it

The MMO genre will never reinvent itself, WoW's success will go down in history as legend and greedy assholes will forever keep taking WoW's design choices for granted and keep creating the same game but set in an alternate universe because fuck trying something original, "were too afraid of failing even though we ALWAYS fail with our WoW clones".

This is the ideal.

If players pay you subscription fees, and pay you for cash shop items, but only actually log in once a day for five minutes to check their garrison, you're saving a fortune on server costs while still drawing income.

The perfect business model is one in which consumers give you money in exchange for nothing. This is why cell phone games are a $20 billion market.

I'm not a naive child. I understand that video gaming has always been a profit-driven industry. But at some point, wasn't there some idea that they would create "fun experiences" in exchange for profit, and now the whole industry is a business model that explicitly hates their own consumers and seeks solely to wring money out of them without actually providing any entertainment?
