I think Cata ended up sucking because it wasn't one big landmass like NR and OL. Also no sanctuary didn't help.
Terrible writing, even by Blizzard's standards, nonsensical pacing/plot, clusterfuck of thematic content, world rehaul made redundant almost immediately, flying.

It didn't work well but I feel they at least tried their best here, tried to make old world levelling fun and bring it up to date and it was a huge ask, meaning they cut corners with new content. Pandaria was far better if you managed to overlook the whole panda thing, they managed to make it not childish and it was good. however garrisons are complete shit and everything about the latest wow expansion has been complete shit

Hey guys, I know we haven't posted anything new in quite awhile, but here is a new patch that contains a hard as fuck dragon boss that only drops specific unoptimized accessories. Not a hardcore raider in a full raiding guild? Then we have absolutely nothing new to offer.
I was actually hyped for Cata when they first announced it.

this and the fact that they had 1big zone and didn't make much use of it. deepholm
may not seem much at first but holy shit if they expanded upon that becoming something similar to outland and northrend;
with each side of the map belonging to more elemental planes instead of drastically changing alot of things in the old zones and continued to introduce the new zones with out allowing flight in entirety azeroth while still having a way to go out into the old zones, that possibly could've been the expansion to top Bc, but no blizzard lost alot of their direction with a couple of people who moved to different projects they failed to realize the importance of world pvp and how damaging flying mounts were to the world.

Blizzard started to make shortcuts and make things easier so new players would come in.
Raids become easier, and giving the bad players raids means they couldn't make raids hard again and take that content away from the people who had already tasted it.
