Another thing you have to consider is before the open beta, there literally was almost no talk about Overwatch except in a few places on Reddit or some news outlets on occasion.
Even though people fucking love Overwatch now, during it's production Warcraft was the most bankable Blizzard IP there was.

There really wouldn't need to be much of a plot beyond "getting the band back together". The original team starts fighting against the omnic rebellions in various spots around the world. They meet up with other fighters and gradually learn about the Talon conspiracy. Let's make the Talons backed by Vishkar or some other megacorporation for the big reveal. Eventually they realize some bad guy in a suit has been playing both the omnics and the Talon mercs against each other, stirring up both sides of the war to make money and stay in power. This provides a reason for characters to work together. Reaper and the other Talon guys thought the omnics were the real threat. Bastion, Lucio, and other rebel characters are sick of Vishkar taking everything over. Omnic haters like Zarya and Torbjorn realize that most of the omnic threat is coming from the real bad guys Symmetra realizes Vishkar is evil, everyone joins up to take down their HQ, and they all formally reestablish Overwatch as the ending.
Wouldn't be that hard to write. Just do it Marvel/Whedon style, give each character a bit of development. Blizzard probably wouldn't let any hero be killed off, but Reinhardt dying and his medic companion taking on the power suit in his stead would serve as a nice moment for everyone to come together and kick ass.

a lot of big budget summer flicks do this shit, they hire TV nobodies because they cost less and they need to save the money for the CG scenes.
