So how many JRPGs actually have you fight God?
I don't mean a mortal that absorbed enough power to become a god, or some random god from a polytheistic setting, or anything like that. I'm asking about what games have you fight the actual capital G guy who created the universe God.
I see people talk about it all the time, but how common is it really?
>>339500146
God?
Not many.
A God?
Quite a few.
>>339500146
Are you talking about the Christian God? If so, I can't think of any. Usually you fight the god of the universe in some JRPGs.
SMT, for example, has a God that's based on the Jewish God.

>fighting that which is purely active
The concept of "fighting God" doesn't make any sense in material terms. I guess if your main character did a lot of evil shit, that is more or less "fighting" God since you are actively trying to private yourself of moral goodness.
I think your definition of God is talking about Jehovah, likely because you're western and you grew up among Christians and Jews.
"God" as a concept just refers to an all knowing creator that appears in a lot of religions. In many Shin Megami Tensei games, you can even have "God" as he appears in many religions work for you.
>>339500547
Mostly, yes. I'm mainly asking about what people mean when they say "you fight God." Whether that means the Christian God or a stand in that has similar connotations.
I guess I can expand that to include the strongest god of a pantheon, but that's still fighting "a God" rather than "God."
Post your Final Battle music!

>>339500146
I think Xenoblade Chronicles has that.
But I have no idea about the pure Christian god, since a fight against a literally onnipotent being that can prevent any kind of reality bending bullshit makes no sense.
>>339500146
The first SaGa had you fighting someone labeled God, though his final form had him looking more like a grey alien.
Shin Megami Tensei 2 and 4 Final
Some Dragon Quest game, not sure which

God is Jubileus from Bayonetta
A god is the random assortment of chumps you fight in God of War
>>339501807
God is omnipotent, rules over everything, can watch you fap any time.
A God only rules over specific things with powers that fit their role. Usually more human-like in personality and morality. Can be either good or assholes.
In Disgaea 4 you have several run ins with God, the last boss is a weapon created by God, and one of the endings has the party going into a war with God, but you never actually get to fight him in the conventional battle sense. In Disgaea 4 Return, the main character smacks the shit out of God though.

>>339500146
The only way to fight the god god is for him to have willed it. An elaborate spectacle to fool his children into thinking they have achieved true free will and independence from their creator.
Are Mass Effect Reapers gods?
Fallout New Vegas you can fight God if you so desire.
But that's a WRPG
>>339501807
>god
Basically something with super powers, could be called an alien and it wouldn't change anything

That which caused and continues to cause all things, allowing for change and being, fully transcendental, pure actuality, pure being, beyond the subordination of the intellect...

What if you're fighting an unsuspecting God from another dimension
>>339502489
Definitely not.

Isn't Jewish and Christian Gods pretty much the same thing?

Xenoblade
SMT games
first that came to mind. It's usually japanese games, japs love the idea of killing god for whatever reason.
Pic related, does a pretty neat job at it too.

In D&D there are many gods and they are pretty weak. You never face off against Ao so no you are not fighting god
Also in planescape you arent even fighting a god at all.
>>339500146
You fight THE God in Asuras Wrath. Created the universe and everything.
>>339500146
>>339500146
Games usually have you fight a Demiurge in some way, but I can't think of a possible way to incorporate a fight with the omnipotent and omniscient god of Judeo-Christian lore. Even SMT's version of YHWH is still just a Demiurge with finite power.
>>339501630
still, he could create life and reshape matter, so he was a "God". An artificial, man-made one, but still a God
>>339502109
Aren't all of those polytheistic settings where the god you fight would be one of many? Sounds more like a case of fighting a God, rather than God to me.
Or do you actually fight the guy that created the universe?
>>339502729
>>339502847
They are the same thing. Christians believe that Jesus is the son of god and their savior. Jews believe that Jesus was not the son of god and Moses was the savior.
>>339502973
>not just breaking the rules and just killing the omnipotent guy
it's like you don't even do the impossible
So, which RPGs had the least powerful (in terms of lore, not difficulty) final boss?
I can only think of New Vegas, where final boss is some general shitter
>>339500146
>God
>black
Maybe not entirely related but Breath of Fire II had a neat twist.
There was this religion that I recall was very similar to Christianity, they had churches and everything and people prayed to a god.
Turn out this "god" was some faggot monster inside the earth who wanted to destroy the world. He was waiting there to get stronger with prayers from the religion.
End of blog. I think that twist was pretty nice.

Literally nobody here is saying they're worshipping God.
They're just making a distinction about multiple pagan gods that have their own weaknesses and an actual omnipotent being.

Well in the DC universe before things got shitty, Yahweh was the supreme being while the other gods were born from the gestalt consciousness of their worshippers. Of course the only reason Yahweh is on top is because enough people believe He is, and therefore Morpheus overwrit reality making it so.

What? i though the demiurge created everything in our physical realm ans is omnipotent inside his own creation, ok, there are higher planes that not even him can comprehend but if he can't neither us, so he is The God to us.

But Jubileus wasn't God, it was the god of heaven.
Which yes makes it sound like some one above all shit, but there's a deity for every realm in Bayonetta, and Juby was just the one left in charge of one reality during the first war for creation. There's at least two others equal to her.
Depends what you really mean by God.
Tons of RPGs Jap and Western go for a more polytheistic view with just an extremely powerful being with some ego and a flaw. It's more the equivalent of fighting Zeus or Odin.
If you're going for a straight up monotheistic christian-judeo kind not many because it's kind of hard to really design a fight. I guess maybe Asura's Wrath with Chakravartin? Not really an rpg but the sheer balls to the wall craziness of the last dlc chapter and how long you fight him really gives a sense of fighting something omnipotent.
