The GBA connector for the GCN was fine and that Speedboard shit was only licensed by them. I don't think any games ever used that memory expansion for the DS, which is a shame because it might have allowed for higher resolutions in games. What was that USB dongle even used for?

Put it in a USB slot on a computer with internet access and your computer acts as a WiFi hotspot, although I believe it only worked with the Wii and DS. Keep in mind that, at the time, shit like WiFi and HDTVs were still new. I remember a lot of complaints in magazines at the time about how Dead Rising for the 360 had impossible to read subtitles unless you had an HDTV.
Anyway, a third party eventually released a USB to ethernet port for the Wii and it worked out extremely well. It still boggles my mind that the Wii didn't just have a port built in already but whatever.
