The only Resident Evil I've played is RE4. I think it had terrible controls. The mouse automatically moved left for some reason, so I had to use a controller. I think the game is very unsatisfying to play and I wouldn't ever recommend buying it.

Dead Space

Overall probably Resident Evil. The first three games in both series are fantastic, but Silent Hill 4 is pretty terrible outside of the interesting room mechanics. Resident Evil 4, while being a complete departure for the series, is a pretty awesome game.

I still prefer Silent Hill most of the time, but Resident Evil is a bit better simply because SH4 is ass.

The original PC port is the worst version of the game. The updated port released a few years ago is the best version of the game and works fantastically. It's definitely worth a second try.

SH1 really deserves a REmake treatment

SH just has a cast with interesting background/psychology. They are also likable.
RE cast is still unique (in its time) but the original 3 RE games characters kinda lack personality.
Overall, SH > RE in this department.

SH > RE

RE > SH
Seriously you can run past most mobs in SH it's not even funny

This is debatable. You can clearly see SH borrows some ideas from RE so I think RE wins this one.
Puzzles in both series are always nonsense though.

They both look ok when they were out. I think it's hard to argue here. I like RE 1,2,3 pre-rendered BGs more though.

SH is better than RE in most cases.
RE has the best chase scenes.
It boils down to preference I guess.

Seriously, after a few area, Leon or Jill are like fucking zombie hunters. The herbs and ammo are plenty. You can never really feel too powerful in SH.

tl;dr: They are different games with different approaches and directions. Trying to compare them is stupid.
