It's neat. Simple, but fun.
The primary appeal are the tank battles, basically duels between mobile fortresses where you shoot the fuck out of each other til a weak point you have to ho in and hit appears. It's actually pretty deep compared to the rest of the game, which is mostly just getting stuff for the tank battles.
Mainline game is IV. I can't remember how many times I've finished it.
Spinoff would be the first monster game, and slime mori mori 2 equally

Man, I finished DQ 5, 6, 8, 9 and I don't remember a single character from any of them lol.
I remember really liking every one of them too, the atmosphere is godlike, you really feel like you're on an adventure.

How does it compare with DQH1? Only played a bit over my friends place and while not really a DQ fan he seem to enjoy it. Seem like kind of Musou but enough difference that it's not really one.

Basic JRPG but in a good way. There's not much in the ways of fluff and overly dramatic scenes. That being sad it's depressing as fuck at times. As for gameplay it's always been pure turn based but Horii always tried to do something new with each game.

Combine early Wizardry and Ultima, simplify them so everyone can enjoy them, and add lovable and memorable monster designs
IV. I like how the stories converge.

DQH1 is a musou with a different coat of paint (like SnK), DQH2 is an action RPG with a musou combat system. It's pretty much better in every way, aside from no Yangus.
It's open world, has online co-op for story missions and an optional online dungeon (that you can play offline too, don't worry), class switching in town for the two MCs, and a bunch of free DLC on the way including an objective-based PvP mode.
The skill progression and alchemy are way, way better, too.
