It's kind of strange looking at the life and development of a fighter.
Smash 4 gets a lot of entrants because it's still relatively young in its "meta" life. Updates and patches constantly change the game, so until those stop it will keep receiving more entrants because the newer players still believe they have a chance since the meta isn't fully established.
On the other hand, a lot of the Melee players are pretty decent, and know very damn well what to do and expect in tournament play. The lower number is there, but the skill is way higher. In comparison, out of the 526 entrants for Smash 4, a lot of those will be jobbers that die in pools, as opposed to the ones in Melee which can still put up a damn good fight.
Ki is a legitimately good game, shame about the numbers

Problem is, EVO is basically the first big tournament it's going in. While TPC have hosted tourneys prior to this, it didn't get a chance to really set it's feet in the ground. To show everyone it's ready.
