They are. Go play them. People argue rabidly over them even to this day for a reason. Whether you like the games or hate them, they're worth the experience regardless.
And it's especially worth playing FFVII now before the remake comes out, because it's going to be a completely different experience.

Final Fantasy VIII had a lot of things that you either really loved or hated.
The junction system was considered to be extremely tedious and way less streamlined than VII's materia system. On top of that, you could essentially break the game if you grinded enough in the early game. For example, tyou could convert tents into Curaga, then junction them to your HP and have way more health than intended.
VIII also had arguably a much worse story line and characters.
The only thing I really like about VIII is that it was a massive improvement graphically over VII.

maybe sphere grid grind to get lower/higher tier skills/stats then end game materia to specialize your character and get master skills/abilities

That sounds pretty good actually. I liked the grind of the grid but by the end of the game I was bored, and it was really hard to get end-game materia and actually master your character.

FF8 had an interesting concept, at the start, even if the characters were exceptionally wooden and the world felt bland. However that isn't what makes that game shit. At some point in the 3rd act you find out all these people you are now adventuring with just happened to be children you grew up with in a orphanage and the person running it is the evil sorceress you are now fighting. You just all had amnesia or some shit.
Literally the most retarded fucking thing I've seen in a videogame. I actually quit playing soon after.

This wasn't exactly why I got irritated with 8 although it's certainly a strong contender. My problem with 8 is the importance it places on Rinoa and how half of Squall's stress is strictly because of her. I get that it's supposed to be a love story but holy shit
