What do I need to get into monster hunter? I keep getting invited to play but I've never touched this genre. Also is the 3DS the definitive way to play this?

The 3DS has the current version of MH, as well as the upcoming release of MH Generations on July 15th. The older versions, such as the Freedom series, we're on the PSP. If you've played any of the Souls games, then you'll be somewhat familiar with what MH has to offer.
The basic premise is this: Go hunt monsters to make armor and weapons to hunt larger and stronger monsters to make stronger weapons and gear...repeat ad infinitum. It's doable solo, but you'll get the most out of it when playing with friends.
4U is great, but it's only on the 3DS itself.
If you want to emulate, Portable 3rd is a fairly good starting point. Though it was Jap-only, there's a fan English translation and /mhg/ has a link to a patched ISO in their pastebin.

As someone who just go into Monster Hunter last week (MH4U and playing it solo), it will start off pretty slow and you might feel a little bit disengaged. But as soon as you get to the big monster hunts and familiarize yourself with a weapon set that you like, you'll become hooked.
It's pretty fun and although I'm having a blast playing it alone, I reckon playing with friends will make the experience a lot better. Don't expect this to play like Dark souls though.

Multiplayer is balanced around 2-3 players, and aside from the absolute end-game content, and some notable bosses (Dalamadur and Gogmazios) 4 man teams will completely obliterate most quests. The only worry is that if you play with scrubs they might fail the quest by carting 3 times on their own.

Bring Lifepowder, it's a group mega potion.
Don't mount more than once or twice, and only if the monster is enraged and causing trouble.
Don't attack near other people, you can trip them which interrupts their attacks. As an IG, getting full buff will prevent you from being tripped.
Everyone has bad days, but learn when to cut your losses, mostly if the group is consistently failing quests and it isn't your fault.

IG is actually one of the best weapons in the game but its gets shitted on because 'muh mounts.' In actuality a good glaive user doesn't spam mounts unless the monster is a lot easier to deal with because of them like Akantor/Ukanlos or Fatalis otherwise just keep buffs and keep up the pressure.
For example, there's a lot of people who want to spam mount on Teostra, but it's smarter to just attack normally and only use mounts when it's close to going supernova to cancel it's enraged state.
But yea, IG is legitimately one of the best weapons. Greatsword/DB are great too, same with Charge Blade. I personally have a hard on for Lance as well but the top 4 weapons are arguably those. HBG is in there somewhere for certain monsters too.

Give everyone at least one chance.
There's no such thing as a dedicated support weapon. Except for LBG in Hame shenanigans, but even then the user in those runs is vital to the entire attempt.
If you want specific breaks, ask before the hunt starts.
Be wary of others around you when attacking. Especially Lance users, who lack super armor.
Regardless of weapon choice, don't spam mounts. It works like Blast.
If you do mount, signal just before you are done.
Though point for point raw in 4U/X is generally better, try bringing a suitable elemental weapon if possible.
If you can help it, try not to prematurely end any status or tripping the monster is under. Tail cutting is notorious for this, try not to go cutting it when some guy with a GS or Hammer is preparing a charge on a paralyzed monster's head.
And most importantly, do your research on what you're hunting.
Before attempting G-Rank, please complete Caravan and get wystones to help against frenzied/apex monsters. In G2 and G3, please try to prioritize doing the quests that unlock the requests to upgrade the Wyceum to let you carry two wystones. Depending on what you want to do a lack of upgrading it can result in a swift kick even if you're fine otherwise.

No idea how good the dragon bombs actually are against Dah'ren, but taking the binder and then disconnecting sounds like a trolling attempt.
Dah'ren have a ton of breakables you can get by with ordinary weapons, especially dragon and thunder ones.

Also 4x HP? Monsters are typically twice as resilient in multiplayer, depending on the rank they have higher defense. I think the Caravan/Village monster defense always stays the same regardless of rank, or at least it shows it in the few G-Rank quests there.
