SJ isn't really "mainline," but definitely has the shittiest Law/Chaos endings around. Neutral is pretty infamously bad in SMT2 and Nocturne though with Nocturne's Neutral really cementing the "neutral=reset button" shit.
I didn't get Neutral in SMTIV, and don't know much about it. I didn't mind Law in it, butI'm a nostalgia faggot and don't count any game without Kaneko as mainline, even if it has the roman numerals.

Neutral IV is shit though. Like people will say neutral doesn't address any problems in the other games, but that is 100% true in IV.
Tokyo was overrun with demons that they couldn't deal with over the course of 25 years, and the few that were pacified by red pills no longer are, and the gate to the expanse (which being opened once was what caused all the demons that flooded Tokyo in the first place) got opened TWICE during the course of the game, flooding Tokyo with more demons.
All you did was close the gate. That's it. You didn't do anything to deal with the demons that were already there, or the new wave of demons that came in. Even worse, you got rid of the Dome, which was the only thing keeping the demons contained and destroying Mikado.
Every settlement like Kiccigiorgi that's spread out from where Mikado was is fucked if so much as a single Oni wanders their way, and they don't have any sort of teleporters, means of communication, demon summoning programs, guns, fucking nothing. The best they have to offer are some peasants with farm tools.
There could not be more blood on your hands for no reason than Neutral ending.

Lucifer has proven in SMT1 that he doesn't risk anyone becoming more powerful than him and will use underhanded tactics to get rid of potential powerful enemies. The Demi-Fiend is being molded into his chosen one similarly to how Aleph was to be molded into the Messiah. Just another tool of the Orders of Law and Chaos to use in their war.

One of the important aspects of Luci in nocturne is that he is both a curious boy and a jaded old man. He is both interested in the outcome of your actions and at the same time he has seen this vortex world shit play many many times before. He is probably ready to repeat the process all over again in another vortex world in another place in the amala universe. That's why he is less proactive in Nocturne than in other SMT games.

Direct sequels kind of have to take place after Neutral endings since Chaos and Law usually lead into more permanent solutions that don't offer lots of leeway for a sequel.
SMT1 might be the exception since the world pretty much takes the Law path after the events of part 1 anyway. When playing II, I actually thought at first that the Law ending was canon. Point being, Neutral is the only real ending that sets up for sequels.
