Will it be worth the wait?

Does this have the potential to be the best kickstarted game to date?

It's going to be silly as fuck, isn't it?
>>
Honestly?
Probably.
The game is in good hands. Development has had almost 0 hiccups and from initial previews it looks like they're delivering.
This is why you don't over promise, and make good with the money you're given.
>>
a lot of good kickstarter games can go underlooked due to little media attention or no big names attached to the project
>>
>>339228805
gib good kickstarter games i'm genuinely interested and feel like checking some out

I've heard good things about Expeditions Conquistador, but haven't gotten around to playing it.
>>
I'm sure it'll be loved by fans of 3D platformers, but I'm not sure how large that portion of the gaming community is.
>>
>>339228805
Yooka Laylee is underlooked. None of its recent news made its way to the big gaming journalism sites. No one covered the new grunty, and no one covered the edge magazine information.
>>
>>339228962
it will be loved by anyone who played banjo-kazooie

That's a lot of people.
>>
>>339229070
I think the amount of attention it gets at E3 will be a major part of its success. With Nintendo only offering Zelda stuff, I'm sure YL will capture the interest of Nintendo fans.
>>
>>339228646
Well it's the one I'm looking forward to the most. Of all the proclaimed genre revivals (point-n-click, CRPGs, sidescrollers), this one's closest to my heart.
>>
>>339228646
Hell fucking yeah! This game will save platformers and may even bring back collectathons from the dead.
>>
If I'm not mistaken, this is Wise and Kirkhope's first game together. I just wanna hear some good music from the literal gods.
>>
>>339229070
I know the whole blog thing is incestuous and retarded, but you can't just take shit from other print publications can you?

Anyway, that kind of figures. With the way that gaming journalism sites are now, this probably isn't the kind of game they're interested in or even aware of.
>>
>>339229617
They also have Robin Beanland of Conker fame on board. OST is gonna be GOAT
>>
>>339229856
Beanland is in? This is news to me. Got a source?
>>
>>339229856
Actually Robin Beanland's still at Rare. Steve Burke from off of Kameo is working on it though.
We haven't heard anything from him yet.
>>
>>339229856
He also did Jet Force Gemini's soundtrack.
One of the most underrated imo.
>>
>>339228875
I liked Superhot and Song of Seven, didn't know about them during their campaigns, tho
>>
>>339229947
Really? I could have sworn there was something about him mentioned in the kickstarter. Maybe I'm misremembering things
>>
>>339230232
Well he's definitely not listed on the Playtonic site.
>>
>>339230523
My mistake then, it must have been Steve after all. Never played or seen much of Kameo, so I don't know what to expect from him.
>>
>>339229080
God. I hope so.

I've developed this insecurity that not enough people like the things I like to form a viable market anymore.
>>
Looks really good. I will pirate it when it comes out since they already got paid.

Only Nintendo is keeping the genre alive. Despite high sales for 3D mario games, no one else seems to imitate them for some reason.

>kekstarter

Good things have come out of Kickstarter. Just because there are a couple high profile failures doesn't mean the whole thing is sour. Hell, they said they were going to make the game regardless and just wanted additional funds to make it bigger.

>a fucking uncharismatic bat and lizard
>a shitty bee

Sort of hard to judge any of the characters without seeing what their personalities are like in game. I can agree their designs are weak, but I can't call them uncharismatic without seeing more.

>obvious pre rendered worlds that won't look like that in the final build

Nothing they've shown looks impossible. Small teams working in Unity have produced things that look that good before.

>no mayles
>no stamper brothers

Fair enough, I guess? Those are the only major missing players. Stampers don't do much of anything these days and Mayles is busy with his pirate game so I don't think that was ever possible, anyway.

here's my list of good kickstarted games

Shovel Knight - very fun retro 2d platformer, I know there is a stigma to these but this one really managed to raise the bar

The Banner Saga - strategy game where you control a caravan oregon trail style, and command turn based combat with a very good story, this was my favorite game of 2014. Highly, HIGHLY recommend it.

Expeditions: Conquistador - strategy game where you play as a conquistador in Mexico, you can choose to be a historical rape and pillage conqueror or be a benevolent white dude setting up trade routes.

FTL - rougelike space game, was the first good kickstarter game

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare - medieval multiplayer first person combat

Shadowrun Returns - rpg/strategy game, pretty good story

Volgarr the Viking - 2d action adventure game, quite challenging

Octodad: Deadliest Catch - rather unique game where you play as an octopus trying to fit into human society, the controls are intentionally awkward to simulate an octopus trying to walk on two legs, its a bit silly but fun

Mercenary Kings - combination of metal slug and monster hunter, amazingly good sprite work

Xenonauts - basically a remake of the original XCOM, if you liked that you'll like this

Divinity: Original Sin - isometric RPG like the early bioware titles

Freedom Planet - 16 bit platformer sort of similar to sonic

Wasteland 2 - rpg similar to fallout 1+2

Awesomenauts: Starstorm - a moba on a 2d plane, more like a 3v3 fighting game than dota

Lisa - like the earthbound games, but quite brutal

Sunless Sea - roguelike style game where you control a boat exploring new waters

War for the Overworld - dungeon keeper style game

Chroma Squad - strategy game with a super sentai/power rangers theme, quite fun

Undertale - combines gameplay from earthbound and shoot em ups, with a very meta story

also hard west, ask me more about any of these and id be happy to go on

the combat took a fair bit to get used to but mainly beause its extremely different from the combat in other strategy games, if you haven't played many of them that might not be an issue for you. But they set up the story in such a way that if you ever lose a battle you don't game over, the story just changes to incorporate the loss. Losing the final battle is the only time you get a game over (and in the sequel they actually made it so the ending changes if you lose the last battle) Also you can just set it to easy if you're struggling.

Give this review a watch, I thought it was pretty fair.

Really I can't recommend it strongly enough.
>>
>>339228801
The only thing that could be considered a hiccup is the toybox getting delayed a few months, but they're actually adding a lot more content to it anyway, so it kinda balances out. If anything it's looking like things have only been getting better than expected.

Get your eyes checked, those are clearly not prerendered and if anything are likely to look better in the final.

Everything you've said is vague and baseless. The game is shaping up to be great so far and will probably turn out much better than what we're seeing already.

YL is being made by hipster pricks from the N64 era. And regardless of what you think of it, those games are the pinnacle of developers caring about their products, and Rare was at the top. (keyword: was)

The only way this game can be bad is if the people making it abandon everything they stand for.

The directors at Rare never really functioned like a film director would, though. I'm pretty sure these guys can handle that part.

What I'm more worried about is the friendly pressure, team rivalry, and sheer ambition that Chris and Tim were known to instill in their work force.

Rare hasn't been the same without them, and even if most at Playtonic remember those days, some tough decisions won't be made without that kind of outside driving force.

I'm absolutely amazed at the fact that it's been a few months since they've announced the kickstarter and they already have quite a lot of things to show for it when literally all Kickstarter games I've seen required 2 years to see any significant progress, if there's any progress at all, either way the end result always ended terrible.

Armikrog? Buggy mess, lackluster story
Broken Age? Half finished, Tim Schafer is a hack.

It's not true. Rare was working on a Banjo game, then decided to add cars because they just got the Havok engine and wanted to make use of it. All of the stories about Microsoft coming in and ruining it are bullshit made up by fans who want to continue running with this narrative that MS is evil and trying to steal Rare's soul or whatever.
>>
>>339233062
The combat is fantastic on paper, but in practise is very, very bad and essentially requires cheese gameplay to be playable.

The basic idea is that units have health and armor like usual, but taking health damage lowers both your health AND your damage.

This sounds great on paper, but since the turn system works like chess, killing enemies is actually a really bad idea since it gives full health enemies more frequent turns and thus means the enemy does more damage than if you spread out your damage and try to keep all your enemies on a tiny sliver of health (and thus doing no damage). What makes it even worse it outside of a few rare enemies, armor break moves are always WAY inferior to damage dealing moves, since you will always lower the enemy's damage when you do damage to them, whereas armor breaks let them have a full damage turn.
The final nail for the gameplay is that your troops carry their wounds and you have to spend extremely scarce resources to heal them if they get too wounded, turning the combat into a triple whammy of shallow, tedious and frustrating.

If you're looking for an ok story you could do worse (you could also do way better, though), but for actual gameplay it's really terrible.

Go watch the Rare Revealed interview about Nuts&Bolts that came with Rare Replay.

They talk about the whole design process and how they COULD have made something cool but decided for whatever reason that cars was the way to innovate Banjo.

We almost got a remake of Banjo Kazooie with brand new content to fool the player for example.
>>
>>339239942
>They talk about the whole design process and how they COULD have made something cool but decided for whatever reason that cars was the way to innovate Banjo.

This sort of shit is just totally perplexing to me. 3d platformers were a winner at the time (and probably still are) and BK was at the apex of the genre... then they decide to use the franchise to make a product that absolutely no one asked for or wanted and they had no experience with implementing.
>>
>>339228646
I have a feeling the worlds will be big and repetitive. From screenshots it looks like they're just huge worlds with not a lot of variation. The fact that the N64 didn't have a lot of memory for large locations + the lack of power to render a big scene, forced developers to create small concise worlds, with a lot of variation. This meant you got a lot of quality per measurable unit. It really felt like you were exploring these small little places that resembled actual things - a little village, a big threatening boat, a little mansion with the outdoor area. It was all simple and meaningful. Meanwhile, here you have a huge area with floating cube-y platforms that looks like everything is being copypasted to make up as much space as possible - I find it worrysome. It's like, how you like jumping around? Sure, here's a lot of platforms everywhere. But what made B-K so good, other than the humor and the gameplay, was how well the world was built together. I really hope they make sure to spruce the game up with a lot of variation and that their world building will be as concise and on-point as the one found in B-K.
>>
You guys got pissed about Might No 9 and Bloodstained and you'll get pissed about this too.
>>
>>339239942
We also almost got a remake of BK where the only difference was you race Gruntilda to the Jiggies but they couldn't get her AI to work well.

Honestly I'm not sure I would have wanted a Banjo 3 or a BK remake from a team that is too retarded to even tell a good idea from a bad idea.
>>
>>339241612
>>339240196

The mental gymnastics Greg Mayles and his colleagues spew in that interview is so tone deaf i cant believe it.

These same people made Kazooie and Tooie and thought, "we cant sell a remake with brand new content and we cant make a sequel to Tooie" Theyre out of their mind.
>>
>>339241369
Can be seen as backwards actually, since limitations made it harder to have continuously unique worlds and it was way easier to instance things and copy paste, due to storage, processing, and dev tools. We're more likely to get unique environments today.
>>
>>339241925

There were millions of fans waiting on the edge of their seat for Banjo Threeie for over six years. All they had to do was make that, and everyone would be happy and they'd be swimming in money.

I'm just happy to get my hands on this game, honestly. There seems to be a lot of passion involved in each of their updates.

If it sucks well, too bad but I'm happy with my pledge. I really hope I like it... we'll see boys
