Homefront: The Revolution should have been a PC exclusive, or at least exclusive to PC until the performance issues on consoles could be sorted out. It's one of the best looking FPS games ever made, and if your PC is fast enough and you use the threading fix it runs like a dream.

Honestly it looks pretty good but not really that incredible by AAA standards.

Whilst yes it has good visuals they are extremely bland. Games like the Witcher 3 and fallout 4, BioShock infinite, far cry 4 and so on whilst going for a realistic approach to an extend they all add a layer of styling to make the visuals interesting to look at.

See also: why I find crysis 3 extremely bland and non impressive looking. 0 wow factor for the visuals.

Crytek's focus has always been trying to create visuals that look like photographs taken using somewhat shitty cameras. A sort of hyper-realism. That's why they popularized stuff like Chromatic Aberration. And Far Cry had optional visual profiles that made everything desaturated, or bloomy, and stuff like that.
>>
>>339214976
It's not a "sequel" per se. It's a completely reboot by a totally different developer with zero story connection to the first game.

It's from the team who made TimeSplitters and co-made Crysis 3.

I'm assuming you've played a few hours, so tell us what went wrong. What are the underlying design problems.
>>
Why can't they just release games that fucking work?
>>
>>339214920
The console versions should have been delayed. In the current state, you've got fuckwits claiming the game is "unplayable" because, golly gee, the game is significantly less fun when you're playing on PS4, which is the worst version.

Nevermind that Far Cry 3 on consoles ran at 15fps in places. The game running at 20-20fps on consoles is a HUGE PROBLEM.

I actually had an opportunity to replay Far Cry 3 on the PS3. I only needed the shitty multiplayer trophies for the platinum so that's what I did. The game looks like unbelievable ass which is a shame because I remembered it as a 10/10 game otherwise.

Been playing this pretty enthusiastically. It's got some really good points.

The Yellow Zones are the best and are highly reminiscent of Pandemic's Saboteur, another panned game that everyone hated but me. The Red Zones are a little weaker because it's just all fighting all the time, but then it reminds me of Freedom Fighters, which is also a plus.
>>
>>339216148
>Is it actually a good representation of a resistance movement with mission that have objectives that reflect that?
It's like a hybrid of Freedom Fighters, STALKER, and Metal Gear Solid V. You can walk up to friendly NPCs and made them follow you. You're not very tough, so you have to engage in hit-and-run attacks, and you're often forced to flee from superior enemy forces, especially since you can't craft health items, and instead have to buy them.

The missions tend to revolve around capturing buildings, rescuing NPCs, taking down convoys, stuff like that. It's nothing world shattering, but it is pretty fun at times. I'd honestly rather play this game than anything Ubisoft have made or will make.

My biggest complaint in XCOM 2 was that the objectives were often totally unrealistic for a resistance, like "secure the objective then kill all the enemies".
>>
>>339216494
Yeah. Would definitely recommend playing on the hardest difficulty. If you're caught reloading by just a regular patrol, he will just fucking maul you.

The AI isn't all too complex, but they do what they need to do. Again, their response is a lot like Saboteur. If some shit goes down, bad guys will swarm all over and investigate and start hassling civs. It's not feasible to keep up long fights unless you're really well-holed up and can just rain down shit.

Enemy density is a little low, though. Could use a lot more patrols.
>>
>>339216476
What's your opinion on the enemy encounter system, where once the "general" alert is raised you're told to "Get out of there!" and you have to flee/find a hiding spot/etc? Like, once the shit hits the fan, the game won't let you Rambo your way through the enemies because they keep coming, unlike normal combat where you can in fact kill everyone if you use silencers and strike face.

It seems like not being able to win every fight make sense for the genre, but at the risk of being quite blatantly cheaty because "where exactly are these soldiers coming from"?

Also, I love the music that plays during general alerts. I'm running down alleyways with no hide spot in sight, my fists pumping, my weapons out of ammo, and then it start to rain. Sure, it rains ALL THE TIME but there's something atmospheric about fighting in the rain.
>>
>>339216275

This, but it's because of the PBR workflow for textures.
>>
>>339216698
My biggest had more to do with the fact that there was very little in the way of coordination or organization. The GS game in 2 fucking sucked, even compared to EU.
>>
>>339216826
Spawns are a huge problem. Lots of instances of even an aggroed patrol, armored car and infantry support in all, disappearing sometimes because you turned away.

The Red Zones are little more bland, but I fucking love the Yellow Zones. I wish Hearts & Minds wouldn't fill up as quickly because it's just so great turning those places from clean streets to burning-car conventions.

I'm kinda hopeful that once the performance bugs are sorted out (where it mysteriously runs at 20fps on a high end PC) this game will find its niche. Because when I'm playing it, it's like playing Fallout 4 and Stalker combined into a single game. The game feels sincere and passionate. It takes existing game design ideas and tries to do something interesting.

Even the writing, which isn't award-winner stuff, has a sense of heart. You get the feeling the writers are trying to give each character and faction (KPA who just wanna go home, the rebels who are blinded by their hate for the Koreans, the doctor who hates the effect this violence has on the common people) some depth to them. I really don't get people calling the game "soulless". It has a plucky little heart beating away in a chest that's too big for it.

>you're often forced to flee from superior enemy forces, especially since you can't craft health items, and instead have to buy them.
This is a very interesting design decision, and one I hope the devs don't cave on. Ubisoft's games let you "heal spam" your way to victory. You just run away, hammer the button and perform the generic heal animations until you're all better.

You can't do that in Homefront. You carry needles to heal, with a neat "inject wrist, shake wrist" healing animation, but you're limited to what you can carry, buy, or scrounge. There's no bottomless healing button like Ubisoft's Far Cry games.

He played on PS4, and he whines constantly about how he can't hit anything with this guns.

There are three problems.

PS4 version is worst version.
He sucks at FPS games.
The framerate of the console versions impairs aiming.

Because he has no meaningful criticisms beyond "the performance of PS4 version sucks" he nitpicks stuff like game spawning two identical randomly generated NPCs next to each other.

I was playing Dishonored last night night, and that game did the exact same thing. Assassin's Creed: Syndicate has about 6 friendly NPC models it recycles. But oh, noes, it's a huge problem when this game does it.

Nobody bought the Stalker games when they came out. You don't see people accusing people of shilling the Stalker games just because it was years before anybody actually played them. I bought them day 1 because I didn't mind completely broken games that crashed constantly to desktop.

Homefront: The Revolution started out as a linear FPS game. When Crytek got the IP from THQ, the dev team (Crytek UK, who had previously been working under THQ) asked permission to turn the game into an open world game. Crytek management said okay.

Back in 2013, people were sick of linear FPS games and wanted open world. Now, in 2016, people are sick of open world and want linear FPS games again.

It's damned if you do, damned if you don't.

There are some thematic ones and a few gameplay ones. They're both open world games about fighting as what is, essentially, a resistance. You go around destroying the camps and supply lines of an oppressive warlord and improving the lots of a handful of independent communities that also oppose him. They're both open world games with limited healing. It sounds like Revolution is considerably more involved, though.
>>
>>339218310
I wanna say that it doesn't quite suffer from Ubisoft's shit because the areas are relatively small and densely packed with things to do. It's open world in that you are free to attack objectives in any way you want without having a fuckton of cutscenes, but it's way more focused than it's contemporaries.

Yeah, I guess actually. The different strongholds you attack do different things and affect the maps if you choose to take over one of the other. Like, a drone control tower; if you go straight to that and liberate it, there won't be nearly as many tank drones wandering the streets.

The video specifically says the game doesn't drop below 60fps on low. Also, it's not clear if they're aware of the by now notorious threading but that reduces the framerate on i5s and i7s by about 30% or so unless you disable extra cores and turn them back on while playing.
>>
>>339218567
It's a solid base, especially the vehicular sections, but there's not nearly enough content to justify how long the game is. Combat doesn't develop enough and there aren't enough enemy vehicles or vehicular missions for anywhere near a full playthrough.

Darn. I was really hoping for more of a tug of war thing where you'd have to really work to prevent the occupation from pushing you back out into the Red Zone. Is there any kind of needs (food, water, sleep) system or are the only real resources healing and ammo? Do you do any supply line raiding? What kind of affect does the passage of time have?

I shitpost the crap out of bad games
Some the developers are still butthurt on reddit.
I've met idot pccucks who like to talk big so I taught then a lesson and they never came back to /v/ideogames.
If i buy a game and the game is ovefilled with over sexualized weaboo trash I make a policy on steam to refund the game.
Even a bastard like me can spot a bad game a bad is game is who promote itself as BIG but has SHITTY RUBBLE ASSETS AND I WILL NOT TOLERATE SHITTY RUBBLE ASSETS THATS WHY I RATE THIS GAME MYSELF
0/10 0/10 0/10 0/10 0/10 0/10 0/10 0/10.

>the problem ain't being open world, it is copying Ubisoft's cancerous ideas
Dying Light has everything from climbing radio towers to turn them on to crafting medkits from herbs to Far Cry 3's corpse searching animation.

Homefront, however, isn't quite the same. You don't climb radio towers. It's similar to "Ubisoft Formula" but it's subtly different in many ways.
>>
>>339219654
No, nothing that deep. There are some strikepoints that say something about fuel destruction or food acquisition, but I'm pretty sure those are just there for color. There are a handful of types of actual game-influencing strikepoints, but nothing that deep in particular.
>>
>>339220131
Last question - how moddable is the game? Anywhere near as much as STALKER?
>>
>>339219967
It's a little annoying it times staring at some of the strikepoints and trying to figure out what you're supposed to do to liberate them.

I was stuck on the hospital one in Red Zone Holloway because I couldn't find the fucking medicine manuals and KPA just kept flooding back in.

Later game Red Zones are a lot more interesting as there's a lot more enemy types to deal with more frequently.

Snipers are the biggest fucking bitch.
>>
>>339219654
>Is there any kind of needs (food, water, sleep) system or are the only real resources healing and ammo?
Pretty much. It would be cool if the devs looked at adding a "hardcore" mode with food and water and sleep.
>Do you do any supply line raiding?
None.
>What kind of affect does the passage of time have?
Nothing significant so far as I'm aware. I think the population density changes a bit. Fighting and navigating at night is more difficult due to limited visibility, especially in the rain. I think the nights are 1/2 the length of days because your clock seems to go way faster at night.
>>
>>339220234
Got me. I don't know how mature the modding scene is for Cryengine shit, and I don't think this game is really getting all that much traction for it to be toyed with. I'm speaking straight from ignorance. I have a strong feeling it'll never be quite the monster STALKER is, though.
>>
>>339220398
>>339220442
Thanks anons. Concept's interesting, but I think I'll stick with CoP for the time being. Enjoy the game.
>>
>>339219673
Steam reviews have become so shit. My mind is blown by the number of people giving Homefront 2 bad reviews because the game doesn't have PvP MP and because it isn't like the first game genre-wise. Or people who admit they like the game, but give it a negative review because the game has HUD markers.
>>
So did they fix it or what?

Last I heard it was an irredeemably broken piece of garbage that ran as bad as my grandma on a unicycle.
>>
>>339220234
>Last question - how moddable is the game?
Currently zero. The game files are encypted, which is actually something that pisses me off. Crytek started doing it with Crysis 3, IIRC. The best we can hope for is the developers feeling generous and releasing mod tools and decryption stuff down the road.

It's especially annoying because there's so much modding potential here. For example, my autism demands that NPCs place sausages on the BBQ when they BBQ instead of waving a spatula over an empty grill.

And of course the sprinkling of low quality assets that deserve cleaning up.
>>
>>339220667
No patches yet. On consoles, it's a fucking trainwreck, apparently. On PCs, it doesn't fucking run properly. Real powerful machines that should be able to chew it up chug to maintain a semi-steady 60.

Stability wise, I haven't had any problems with game-breaking bugs.
>>
>>339220547
CoP is a very good game. Best of the Stalker series. I have two criticisms of it, however. So much unvoiced dialogue, and the shitty grass draw distance.
>>
>>339217805
>I was playing Dishonored last night night, and that game did the exact same thing. Assassin's Creed: Syndicate has about 6 friendly NPC models it recycles. But oh, noes, it's a huge problem when this game does it.

I think the real problem is when a game does it and it's extremely noticeable. Take for example Bioshock Infinite, where you look at one npc, walk six feet, and see an exact copypasted version of that npc. DSP's issue likely stemmed from randomization which is more forgiveable than Biocock Infinite's issue, but both are blunders. Dishonored had copypasted guards but the devs did a decent job at downplaying it.
>>
>>339220667
>So did they fix it or what?
Patches are coming "soon". Next one is next week, I think. PS4 got a 1.3 patch that fixed some issues but caused unexpected side effects so it wasn't rolled out to other platforms.

>On PCs, it doesn't fucking run properly. Real powerful machines that should be able to chew it up chug to maintain a semi-steady 60.

There are a few factors. One, the game has a CPU affinity bug. Two, CryEngine is demanding. You can't expect miracles because the game is pushing advanced tech "just because". I think anyone expecting their PC to "chew up" a Crytek game is going to be disappointed.

On the bright side, the developers are promising cross-platform performance improvements in the near future.

>>339220878
>Stability wise, I haven't had any problems with game-breaking bugs.
Same hear. I'm obviously lucky. I've seen zero serious bugs. A few NPCs acting wrong, and a weird square texture effect sometimes when something explores in a fireball but nothing major. No crashes, no broken quests.

What's the issue? Mouse aim feels good for me.

I really like the gunplay in this game. Some dislike it, but it's the best feeling FPS I've played in a while.
>>
>>339217526
How does the aim system works on the computer? Like TS3/every other shooter scheme or like Goldeneye/Perfect Dark

Like aiming through molasses.
>>

Really love some of the weapons and the way the game handles having a limited selection of them. Switching weapon modes mid-fire fight or under duress is an easy way to die, but I feel like it just emphasizes scouting, seeing what you're up against, and customizing as is needed.
>>
Is it worth pirating, /v/?

>>339221535
>Yeah well retards buy a 970 and then expect to max every game ever made, don't they.
We've reached a point where games offer graphics settings with marginal improvement for a huge performance hit. This became a huge problem with Crysis 3. The game looks fantastic on Low. It looks slightly more Fantastic on Ultra with a huge dip in framerate. But the average gamer isn't really gonna notice, for example, cubemaps having proper visibility masking so that objects not visible to the player don't appear in a prebaked reflection. Or more accurate shadows at long distance that halve the framerate.

A savvy player notices clunkly LOD, and might be willing to sacrifice a lot of performance to fix it. But the average player doesn't care that pot plants disappear at 10 meters instead of 30.
>>
>>339221987
When denuvo or whatever it is dies, I'd say yeah. I can't imagine the multiplayer being anything worth a damn, so if you can get this free or cheap, I'd say so.
>>
>>339221726
>The shitty mouse aim that comes with most shitty console ports that don't do raw mouse input.
I haven't noticed anything odd about the mouse aim. It seems like an overall decent PC port, if it is a port. It could be a native PC game. The UI seems M+KB oriented for the most part.

Have you noticed that when you kill an enemy while using a silencer, the game's audio drops in pitch for an instant? It's like a DDDRWWWwwwwrrrr version of Half Life 2's enemy death beep. Also, I notice the weapons seem to be projectile, not hitscan, although I dunno about enemy weapons.

I am annoyed that the pistol laser sight is misaligned when aiming down sights. It's like the laser origin point is too far to the right. I thought about messaging the devs about it, but figured they've got more important issues to deal with.
>>
>>339214068
Who gives a fuck about that shitty cashgrab franchise?
>>
>>339222321
>I heard this game was being made with PC in mind at some point which is why console performance is bad.
It does seem like a strong possibility. After all, this was a Crytek UK game, and Crysis 3, despite popular belief, was a PC game with console ports done by a sub-team.

GB's HF2 review complained that to take a photograph, you have to open your phone and then select camera.

On PC, you press "B". And if you do open your phone, you navigate using your mouse, which is unusual. Even GTA V didn't have a mouse-operated phone. (Resident Evil 6 did, though.)
>>
>>339222442
>audio pitch drop.

What?
>>
>>339222442
I think that's an indicator for when you get a headshot kill. I really noticed it going from base SMG to the max level that doubles its effective range. Normally, the SMG is just shit at killing from more than twenty meters. The basic guards will take two thirds of a magazine to kill. Once I got that range improvement, I've been noticing the sound constantly.
>>
>>339222442
Using the laser sight on the limpet launcher was a billion percent baffling. I thought it would help get a bit more consistent with my arc shots, but you slap it on at like a seventy degree angle, the laser going into the fucking sky.
>>
>>339222684
Kill an enemy with the silenced pistol, and the audio drops in pitch and/or volume. It's hard to put my finger on, but it's consistent. Maybe it's meant for stealth gameplay so you know for certain than an enemy is dead, and not knocked to the ground wounded.
>>
>>339223132
They need to rejig the laser sights. They don't really work when you put a scope on a rifle plus a laser sight. When aiming through the scope, the laser points at a different spot.
>>
>>339223168
Maybe. I swear I've been hearing it even when counter-sniping with the battle rifle. The animations for soldier reactions are surprisngly good for such a game, so that would make sense. Shit, it's almost like Payday 2 reactions for when you hit guys or make them panic and scatter.

I bought a Russian CD key for about $30. I regret nothing. I hope Dambuster stay employed (They're a Deep Silver in-house dev now) and I hope they get to make something really badass like a TimeSplitters remake. Like, how is it not a bigger deal that this game has a faithful recreation of two levels of TimeSplitters in it?

It's a very different game to the first Homefront. Different dev, different genre, different storyline. It's more a game for people who liked Crysis 3 and MGS V.

The difference is that combat is satisfying and so is parkour in Dying Light, while traveling is boring in FC3 and recent AssCreed. The whole night being dangerous is also something new.
